It also provides valuable decision-making insights for international trading companies and investment institutions, helping them optimize their regional supply chain strategies. This guide will help suppliers stay abreast of market trends in Vietnam, mitigate potential risks and enhance their international competitiveness.

Industry Overview

Soybean meal is one of the most critical sources of plant-based protein in animal feed formulations and widely utilized in feed for swine, poultry, and aquaculture. Driven by the scaling up of Vietnam’s livestock industry and rising per capita consumption of meat, poultry products, and aquatic products, feed production has continued to grow, directly stimulating an expansion in the demand for soybean meal.

With the increasing proportion of industrialized feed enterprises, Vietnam’s demand for high-protein, stable-quality soybean meal has become more significant, making soybean meal a key raw material in the feed industry chain.

Due to the limited scale of domestic soybean cultivation in Vietnam, locally produced soybeans contribute minimally to industrial-scale crushing operations. Soybean raw materials are highly dependent on imports.

Domestic oilseed crushing enterprises are strategically located across major ports and industrial zones. By importing soybeans and processing them on a large scale, a supply model of “imported soybeans – local crushing – use by feed companies” has been formed. During periods when international market prices are favorable or supplies are tight, enterprises also directly import soybean meal to supplement their domestic stocks.

Soybean meal prices are influenced by a multitude of factors, including global soybean supply and demand dynamics, climate change, energy prices, shipping costs, and exchange rate fluctuations. As a market heavily reliant on the net importation of raw materials, Vietnam’s soybean meal industry faces significant pressure from the transmission of external risks.

In the coming years, with the continued development of Vietnam’s livestock and aquaculture industries, the demand for soybean meal is expected to maintain steady growth.

Import Market Overview

In recent years, Vietnam imports soybean meal on a large scale and exhibits a high degree of import dependence.

According to CRI analysis, Vietnam’s livestock and aquaculture sectors have experienced sustained growth in recent years, leading to a rapid expansion in the demand for animal feed. Due to the limited scale of domestic soybean cultivation, Vietnam’s soybean meal industry relies heavily on the crushing of imported soybeans or the direct importation of finished soybean meal.

According to CRI statistics, approximately 320 buyers in Vietnam imported soybean meal in 2024, totaling US$ 2.23 billion. In 2025, Vietnam’s total soybean meal imports reached US$ 2.10 billion, a little decreased compare the 2024.

Argentina, Brazil and the United States are Vietnam’s top three sources for soybean meal imports.

According to CRI analysis, Argentina, Brazil and the United States  were the top three sources of Vietnam’s soybean meal imports, accounting for approximately 70.0% , 14.9% and 13.6% of total imports respectively in 2025.

CRI predicts that, in the short term, Vietnam’s imports of soybean meal will continue to maintain an upward trend, driven by the sustained expansion of the feed processing industry, the upgrading of the livestock farming value chain, and the optimization of cross-border trade channels.

Overview of Foreign Investment in Vietnam’s Soybean Meal Industry

Investment Background

With the large-scale development of animal husbandry and the continuous growth of industrial feed production, the demand for soybean meal has maintained a steady upward trend in the long term.

However, due to the limited scale of domestic soybean cultivation, Vietnam’s soybean meal industry relies heavily on imported soybeans for crushing or on the direct importation of finished soybean meal, resulting in a significant supply deficit.

This structural contradiction provides a stable market space for foreign capital to enter segments such as soybean meal crushing, trade and circulation, and warehousing and logistics.

Investment Advantages

1. Political stability and rapid economic development. The Vietnamese government has strong governing capabilities, consistent policies, and a focus on economic development and improving people’s livelihoods.

2. Relatively low labor costs.

3. Strategically located in the eastern part of the Indochina Peninsula, with a 3,260-kilometer coastline and numerous ports, transportation is convenient.

4. Relatively relaxed policies and regulations provide foreign investors with comprehensive legal protections and generous preferential policies.

5. Vietnam has a high level of openness to the outside world, with 19 free trade agreements signed or in progress. Investors can use platforms such as RCEP and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area to explore a broader international market.

Investment Regulations

According to Vietnam’s Investment Law and other regulations, the production and processing of animal feed in Vietnam do not fall under sectors restricted or prohibited to foreign investment. Foreign investors can establish wholly foreign-owned enterprises or joint ventures with local companies in accordance with the Investment Law and the Enterprise Law. However, companies must also obtain a feed production license issued by the agricultural authorities.
