It also provides valuable decision-making insights for international trading companies and investment institutions, helping them optimize their regional supply chain strategies. This guide will help suppliers stay abreast of market trends in Vietnam, mitigate potential risks and enhance their international competitiveness.

Industry Overview

In the feed industry, wheat intended for animal feed serves primarily as a periodic substitute for corn. When international corn prices rise or supplies tighten, feed manufacturers adjust their usage ratios of feed wheat based on nutritional formulations and cost analyses.

Wheat can be used as an energy source in pig and poultry feed, but its protein structure and starch characteristics are different from those of corn. Therefore, it is more of a cost-adjusting alternative rather than a core ingredient.

Vietnam hardly grows wheat. consequently, there is no large-scale domestic supply of raw grain, and the country relies entirely on imports for its feed wheat requirements. A portion of the imported wheat is utilized for flour milling (food-grade applications), while the remainder—classified as lower-grade or non-food-grade wheat—is channeled into the animal feed industry.

Market prices for feed wheat exhibit a high degree of correlation with the international wheat futures market. These prices are significantly influenced by global grain supply and demand dynamics, climate change, export policies in the Black Sea region, energy prices, and fluctuations in shipping rates.

When the price spread between wheat and corn narrows, feed manufacturers typically reduce the proportion of wheat used in their formulations, reverting to a corn-centric feed structure. Consequently, demand for wheat within the feed industry demonstrates significant elasticity and price sensitivity.

The key participants in Vietnam’s market for imported feed wheat primarily comprise major international grain traders, local trading firms, and large-scale feed manufacturing enterprises.

Looking ahead, as the scale of the feed industry expands—and as the Vietnamese feed market’s demand for raw material diversification and cost optimization intensifies—imports of feed wheat may surge during specific years or within particular price windows.

Import Market Overview

In recent years, Vietnam imports feed wheat on a large scale and exhibits a high degree of import dependence.

According to CRI analysis, Vietnam’s livestock and aquaculture sectors have experienced sustained growth in recent years, leading to a rapid expansion in the demand for animal feed. However, as local conditions in Vietnam are largely unsuitable for large-scale wheat cultivation, wheat used for feed purposes is entirely dependent on imports.

According to CRI statistics, approximately 107 buyers in Vietnam imported feed wheat in 2024, totaling US$ 183 million, an increased of 26.3%. In 2025, Vietnam’s total feed wheat imports reached US$ 615 million.

Brazil, Ukraine and United States are Vietnam’s top three sources for feed wheat imports.

According to CRI analysis, Brazil, Ukraine and United States were the top three sources of Vietnam’s feed wheat imports, accounting for approximately 32.5% , 24.4% and 11.8% of total imports respectively in 2025.

CRI predicts that, in the short term, Vietnam’s imports of feed wheat will continue to maintain an upward trend, driven by the sustained expansion of the feed processing industry, the upgrading of the livestock farming value chain, and the optimization of cross-border trade channels.

Overview of Foreign Investment in Vietnam’s Feed Wheat Industry

Investment Background

As the scale of the livestock industry and industrialized feed production expands, feed manufacturers—seeking to optimize formulation costs—are increasing the proportion of wheat used to substitute for corn during specific favorable price windows, thereby generating a steady demand for imports.

Although wheat serves primarily as a supplementary ingredient within the feed sector, Vietnam is a net importer; consequently, international supply chains exert a significant influence on the domestic market. This dynamic creates opportunities for foreign-invested enterprises possessing global sourcing and trading capabilities to participate in the market.

Investment Advantages

1. Political stability and rapid economic development. The Vietnamese government has strong governing capabilities, consistent policies, and a focus on economic development and improving people’s livelihoods.

2. Relatively low labor costs.

3. Strategically located in the eastern part of the Indochina Peninsula, with a 3,260-kilometer coastline and numerous ports, transportation is convenient.

4. Relatively relaxed policies and regulations provide foreign investors with comprehensive legal protections and generous preferential policies.

5. Vietnam has a high level of openness to the outside world, with 19 free trade agreements signed or in progress. Investors can use platforms such as RCEP and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area to explore a broader international market.

Investment Regulations

According to Vietnam’s Investment Law and other regulations, grain trade and feed ingredients in Vietnam do not fall under sectors restricted or prohibited to foreign investment. Foreign investors can establish wholly foreign-owned enterprises or joint ventures with local companies in accordance with the Investment Law and the Enterprise Law. However, companies must also obtain a feed production license issued by the agricultural authorities.
