Industry Overview

Vietnam’s meat and bone meal industry constitutes a vital component of the animal protein feed ingredient sector. Its development is inextricably linked to the livestock, slaughter and processing, and animal feed industries.

Meat and bone meal is primarily produced from slaughterhouse by-products through a high-temperature rendering process. As a high-protein raw material, it is widely utilized in the production of feed for swine, poultry, aquaculture, and pets.

Vietnam’s livestock and poultry farming sector is continuously expanding, accompanied by the gradual maturation of its industrialized feed production system. The use of meat and bone meal in feed formulation continues to increase as an economical animal protein source that can replace fishmeal or some plant protein.

Domestic meat and bone meal production in Vietnam relies primarily on slaughterhouses and animal byproduct processing facilities. However, due to the lack of scale and low concentration in the domestic slaughtering industry, the overall local production of meat and bone meal is limited, so some high-quality meat and bone meal still needs to be supplemented by imports.

Meat and bone meal is primarily procured and utilized by large-scale compound feed manufacturers, aquaculture feed mills, and select pet food companies. As the scale of Vietnam’s feed industry continues to expand, the demand for high-protein feed ingredients maintains steady growth.

In the future, driven by the large-scale development of the livestock industry, increasing concentration within the slaughtering sector, and advancements in the resource utilization of by-products, Vietnam’s domestic production capacity for meat and bone meal is expected to gradually strengthen.

Import Market Overview

Vietnam’s imports of meat and bone meal continue to expand rapidly.

According to CRI analysis, In recent years, the rapid development of Vietnam’s livestock and aquaculture industries has driven a rapid increase in demand for industrial feed, which in turn has led to a rapid expansion in demand for meat and bone meal. However, due to the insufficient scale and low concentration of the domestic slaughtering industry, the overall output of locally produced meat and bone meal remains limited; consequently, a portion of high-quality meat and bone meal still needs to be supplemented through imports.

According to CRI statistics, approximately 130 buyers in Vietnam imported meat and bone meal in 2024, totaling US$ 442 million, an increase of 21.6% year-on-year. In 2025, Vietnam’s total meat and bone meal imports reached US$ 452 million, an increased of 2.4% compare to 2024.

United States, Australia and Argentina are Vietnam’s top three sources for meat and bone meal imports.

According to CRI analysis, United States, Australia and Argentina  were the top three sources of Vietnam’s meat and bone meal imports, accounting for approximately 46.1% , 11.0% and 8.5% of total imports respectively in 2025.

CRI predicts that with the large-scale development of Vietnam’s livestock industry and the continuous increase in industrialized feed production, the import demand for meat and bone meal, as a relatively low-cost source of animal protein, is expected to maintain steady growth.

Overview of Foreign Investment in Vietnam’s Meat and Bone Meal Industry

Investment Background

Vietnam’s slaughter industry remains in a transitional phase, shifting from a fragmented structure toward large-scale, modernized operations. The level of comprehensive utilization of animal by-products still requires improvement.

Foreign companies with mature rendering technology and experience in animal by-product processing can meet market demand by building rendering plants or cooperating with local slaughterhouses.

In addition, Vietnam is highly dependent on imports of high-quality meat and bone meal. This also creates opportunities for international animal protein suppliers to establish trading and warehousing operations in Vietnam.
