The publication of the “Vietnam Sesame Import Guide 2023-2026” aims to provide global agricultural exporters with precise customer acquisition channels, helping them expand into the Vietnamese market more efficiently. It also provides valuable decision-making insights for international trading companies and investment institutions, helping them optimize their regional supply chain strategies. This guide will help suppliers stay abreast of market trends in Vietnam, mitigate potential risks and enhance their international competitiveness.

Industry Overview

Although the scale of Vietnam’s sesame market is relatively limited, it plays a complementary role within the country’s system of agricultural cash crops.

In Vietnam, sesame is mainly used for food processing, such as sesame candy, pastries, condiments, and the production of some traditional foods. Some sesame is also used for pressing sesame oil.

Sesame cultivation is primarily concentrated in the central coastal regions, the southern regions, and certain highland areas—specifically provinces such as Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, and Dak Lak.

Sesame is characterized by its drought resistance, short growing cycle, and strong adaptability. It is often planted by farmers as a crop rotation crop to improve land use efficiency and increase agricultural income.

Due to limited domestic production and significant quality variations, some food processing and trading companies in Vietnam need to import sesame to meet their production needs. The main sources of imports include major sesame-producing countries such as India and Nigeria.

With the development of the food processing industry and the increasing demand for healthy food, sesame, as a high-nutritional-value oilseed crop, has certain development potential in the future. However, in the short term, the supply of sesame from Vietnam will still be insufficient to meet all market demand, and imported sesame will still occupy a certain proportion of the market.

Import Market Overview

Vietnam’s demand for sesame imports continues to rise.

According to CRI analysis, Vietnam’s sesame import market has maintained steady growth in recent years, serving as a key source of raw materials for the country’s food processing and agricultural trade sectors. However, due to limited domestic production and the fact that planting is mainly done by small farmers, production stability is low, resulting in a high dependence on imports.

According to CRI statistics, approximately 120 buyers in Vietnam imported sesame in 2024, totaling US$ 112 million, an increased of 43.4%. In 2025, Vietnam’s total Sesame imports reached US$ 87.23 million.

Brazil, India and Nigeria are Vietnam’s top three sources for sesame imports.

According to CRI analysis, Brazil, India and Nigeria were the top three sources of Vietnam’s sesame imports, accounting for approximately 43.4% , 29.3% and 13.5% of total imports respectively in 2025.

Looking ahead, with the continued development of Vietnam’s food processing industry and the expansion of downstream application markets for sesame, the demand for sesame imports is expected to maintain steady growth.

Overview of Foreign Investment in Vietnam’s Sesame Industry

Investment Background

Vietnam’s sesame industry is relatively limited in scale, but it has certain development potential in the fields of agricultural product trade and food processing.

Sesame cultivation in Vietnam is primarily carried out by small-scale farmers. Production scales are modest, yields are subject to significant fluctuations, and the overall production volume remains at a relatively low level globally.

Therefore, some food processing companies and traders can purchase sesame raw materials through the international market and clean, hull, roast or further process them in Vietnam to supply domestic food manufacturers or export markets. Against this backdrop, foreign-invested enterprises can participate in Vietnam’s sesame value chain through agricultural trade and food processing operations.

Investment Advantages

1. Political stability and rapid economic development. The Vietnamese government has strong governing capabilities, consistent policies, and a focus on economic development and improving people’s livelihoods.

2. Relatively low labor costs.

3. Strategically located in the eastern part of the Indochina Peninsula, with a 3,260-kilometer coastline and numerous ports, transportation is convenient.

4. Relatively relaxed policies and regulations provide foreign investors with comprehensive legal protections and generous preferential policies.

5. Vietnam has a high level of openness to the outside world, with 19 free trade agreements signed or in progress. Investors can use platforms such as RCEP and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area to explore a broader international market.

Investment Regulations

According to the Law on Investment of Vietnam and other relevant regulations, the sale and processing of agricultural products in Vietnam are not classified as a sector restricted or prohibited for foreign investment. Foreign-invested enterprises can enter the market by establishing wholly foreign-owned enterprises or joint ventures. In addition, enterprises engaged in the import and export of agricultural products must also complete import and export procedures in accordance with the regulations of Vietnamese customs and trade management.
