Description

ASEAN Tin Industry

Tin is a rare metal with a silvery-white metallic luster, classified as an important non-ferrous metal and a strategic minor metal resource.

Tin primarily occurs in the form of cassiterite, which is the most important tin mineral in industrial production. Tin is widely used in sectors such as electronics manufacturing, semiconductors, photovoltaics, new energy, the chemical industry, food packaging, and coating materials.

The electronics manufacturing industry is the largest application sector for global tin consumption, accounting for more than half of the total.

The tin industry chain primarily comprises four stages: mining, alumina production, electrolytic aluminum production, and aluminum processing and application.

Established in 1967, ASEAN covers major economies in Southeast Asia and geographically connects the Pacific and Indian Oceans, serving as an important global maritime trade route and industrial chain node. With a population of approximately 680 million, ASEAN is one of the world’s most populous regions, ranking just behind densely populated areas such as South Asia and East Asia.

According to CRI’s analysis, ASEAN’s tin resources are primarily concentrated in Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, and Laos, with Indonesia and Myanmar serving as the core sources of tin ore supply within the region.

The ASEAN tin market has maintained steady growth in recent years, with regional demand driven primarily by the development of electronics manufacturing, the new energy industry, semiconductors, the photovoltaic sector, and consumer electronics.

According to estimates by CRI, the market size is projected to reach approximately US$ 1.0 billion in 2026. With a forecasted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 6.0% between 2026 and 2030, the market size is expected to reach US$ 1.4 billion by 2030.

CRI recommends that global mineral miner, tin smelter, mineral resource investor, private equity (PE) funds and venture capital (VC) firms conduct timely market research on the ASEAN region to prepare for their strategic entry into the ASEAN tin market.
