Description
ASEAN Shipbuilding Industry
The shipbuilding industry is a comprehensive manufacturing industry centered on ship design, construction, repair and conversion. It is an important basic industry connecting ocean transportation, international trade, energy development, national defense and security and marine engineering.
The upstream of the shipbuilding industry mainly includes the supply of core raw materials and components, the midstream includes ship design, construction and installation, and the downstream demand comes from shipping companies, port logistics companies, energy transportation companies, etc.
Established in 1967, ASEAN is the most influential regional cooperation organization in Southeast Asia. Its current member states include 11 countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and East Timor. ASEAN is located in Southeast Asia, connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
In recent years, the demand for shipbuilding in ASEAN has maintained steady growth. The main influencing factors include the growth of regional maritime trade, the need for fleet renewal, the development of marine resources, and increased investment in marine engineering.
The ASEAN shipbuilding market is in a developmental stage, with supply capacity mainly concentrated in countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.
According to CRI estimates, the market size will be approximately US$ 9.5 billion in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of approximately 6.5% from 2026 to 2030, reaching approximately US$ 12.2 billion in 2030. In the future, green ships, LNG carriers, marine engineering equipment, and ship repair and upgrading will become the main growth directions for the ASEAN shipbuilding industry.
CRI recommends that global large shipbuilding groups, shipping and logistics companies, marine engineering equipment and related suppliers, energy giants, private equity (PE) funds and venture capital (VC) firms conduct timely market research on the ASEAN region to prepare for their strategic entry into the ASEAN Shipbuilding market.
