Description
ASEAN Maritime Transport Industry
Maritime transport refers to an international integrated transportation mode that uses ships to transport goods and people via oceans and inland waterways. It is one of the most important logistics transportation modes in the global trade system.
The marine transportation industry includes different industrial chains such as shipbuilding, fuel supply, ship operation, port operation, and various end-user demand areas.
Maritime transport has become a core transportation channel for the cross-regional flow of energy, minerals, agricultural products, manufactured goods, and containerized goods.
ASEAN, established in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1967, is the most influential regional cooperation organization in Southeast Asia. ASEAN is a crucial node in the global maritime network, leveraging its strategic geographical location connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are gradually becoming important shipping hubs, relying on port resources, manufacturing relocation, and regional trade growth.
The development of the ASEAN maritime transport market is highly correlated with regional trade growth, manufacturing relocation, energy and resource trade, and the restructuring of regional industrial chains.
Currently, ASEAN has formed a regional maritime network, with Singapore at its core. Vietnam and Malaysia are developing rapidly, while Indonesia and Thailand are continuing to expand.
According to CRI’s estimates, the ASEAN maritime transport market will be worth approximately US$ 70.0 billion in 2026. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is projected to be approximately 6.0% from 2026 to 2030, reaching a market size of approximately US$ 88.37 billion in 2030.
CRI recommends that global international shipping companies, ship operators, port operators, port infrastructure investment companies, integrated logistics and supply chain companies, shipbuilding, marine equipment companies, private equity (PE) funds and venture capital (VC) firms conduct timely market research on the ASEAN region to prepare for their strategic entry into the ASEAN maritime transport market.
