The economy of China develops rapidly after its access to WTO, which promotes the growth of residents’ income. In 2016, GDP per capita in China has exceeded USD 8,000, and the disposable income per capita of residents has reached about USD 3,452. With the development of Chinese economy and the improvement of residents’ livelihood, people are paying more attention to imported products. Demand for imported products including fruit rises. . According to CRI, in 2016, China imported fruit mainly from about 40 countries and regions, and the major fruit varieties included rambutan, durian, jackfruit, longan, mangosteen, mango and banana. The import value of fruit in China exceeded USD 5 billion in 2016.
According to CRI, with the rising of the purchasing power in recent years, the health consciousness of Chinese residents is awakened, which leads to individual consumer’s increasing demand for imported fruit. Compared to the traditional domestic fruit, imported fruit is generally of better quality and taste. People prefer imported fruit as popular gifts to friends and relatives, which drives the demand for imported fruit. With the development of e-commerce and cold-chain logistics in China, the electronic commerce enterprises selling fresh food are continuously emerging, which has made it convenient for Chinese residents to buy imported fruit. Therefore, imported fruit industry has a promising prospect.
The imported agricultural products are under the strict supervision of the Chinese government. General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China has published the inspection and quarantine requirements for each variety of imported fruit and plants, and only those in conform to the requirements can be imported. The inspection and quarantine of imported fruit by the Chinese government is a dynamic process. The Chinese government regularly reviews the signed protocols. Meanwhile, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China provides unscheduled updates on the list according to the inspection and quarantine situations and the epidemic and disease situations in different countries. On the whole, with the increasing number of the free trade agreements signed by China, the sources and varieties of imported fruit will keep rising.
According to CRI, the economy of China will still keep rising during 2017 to 2021, and residents’ income will keep growing, promoting the rising market demand for imported fruit in China. It is estimated that the CAGR of the import volume of fruit will be above 5% during 2017 to 2021. There are huge opportunities in Chinese market to the fruit planting and trading enterprises worldwide.
