Consumer demand and government requirements for electronic systems lift up vehicle performance and increase comfort and convenience. Giving warning, identifying problems and taking corrective actions will keep drivers safe and alert. The growth of systems and the increase in the price of memory components are expected to increase the auto IC market by 18.5% this year, which will hit a record high of USD 32.3 billion, exceeding the record of USD 27.2 billion last year. If the forecast comes true, it will be the double-digit growth of the auto IC market for three consecutive years.

In the past few years, the global auto IC market has experienced remarkable growth. The market increased by 11.5% in 2014 and decreased by 2.5% in 2015. In 2016, the market rebounded and  achieved a stable growth of 10.6%. It is worth noting that the decline in sales in 2015 was mainly caused by the drop in the prices of key auto IC products: microcontrollers, analog ICs, DRAM, flash memory, and general-purpose and special-purpose logic ICs. The falling prices of these products offset the steady growth that year. .

In 2021, the auto IC market will grow to USD 43.6 billion. The CAGR from 2017 to 2021 is expected to be 12.5%, which is the highest among the six major terminal applications. It is estimated that by 2018, the auto integrated circuits will only account for 7.5% of the entire IC market, and by 2021 the proportion will increase to 9.3%. Analog integrated circuits, including general-purpose analog and special automotive simulation, are expected to take up 45% of the automotive IC market in 2018, and MCUs secure a share of 23%. There are numerous suppliers of automotive analog devices. However, the acquisitions in recent years have reduced the number of large manufacturers. For example, in 2015, NXP acquired Freescale and now is acquired by Qualcomm; Analog Devices acquired Linear Technology in Mar. 2017, and Renesas acquired Intersil.
