China’s shipbuilding industry has been developing rapidly with the government’s policy support and cost advantages since the beginning of the 21st century. China-made mainstream ships including container ships, bulk carriers and oil tankers and high-end ships including liquefied gas carriers have certain competitive advantages on the international market. In the recent decade, the global shipbuilding industry presented a market structure of tripartite China-South Korea-Japan competition.
According to CRI, the global market share of China’s shipbuilding industry rose significantly from 2007 to 2017. In 2017, the quantity of completed ships was 42.68 million DWT, increasing by 20.9% YOY; the quantity of new orders was 33.73 million DWT, increasing by 60.1% YOY. China’s shipbuilding industry captured the largest global market share in all the three major indicators with the quantities of completed ships, new orders and orders on hand accounting for 41.9%, 45.5% and 44.6% respectively of the global total. China has become one of the most important shipbuilding centers in the world.
According to CRI, as a typical cyclical industry, shipbuilding is closely related with global economic environment and shipping market. For example, the financial crisis in 2008 had a profound influence on shipbuilding, which urged the global shipbuilding industry to cut overcapacity and carry out transformation and upgrading. Since 2013, the quantity of new orders has been declining and the quantity of orders on hand has declined for four consecutive years, which reduced the capacity from 80 million DWT in 2012 to 65 million DWT at the end of 2015. At the end of 2017, the quantity of orders on hand was 87.23 million DWT, falling by 12.4% YOY. As the quantity of orders on hand has declined for four consecutive years, most shipbuilders can only maintain a workload of about one year. In 2017, new orders tended to concentrate in dominant enterprises. The top 10 shipbuilders accounted for 73.4% of the total quantity of new orders and 58.3% of the total quantity of completed ships. Four Chinese shipbuilders ranked among the global top 10 by the quantity of new orders, and five Chinese shipbuilders ranked among the global top 10 by the quantity of completed ships. In 2017, the prices of upstream raw materials, human cost and financing cost kept rising while the increase in ship prices was little. Therefore, the profitability of Chinese shipbuilders was still low.
From 2018 to 2022, the global economy and the global shipping market are expected to grow, which will lead to a rising demand for new ships. Meanwhile, the increasing global investment in oil and gas development will require more offshore oil and gas platforms and promote the development of offshore wind farm equipment and LNG related equipment. It is expected that the export volume of China-made ships will continue to grow from 2018 to 2022 because China’s shipping industry has certain cost advantage on the international market.

Description
The Chinese government provides that a vehicle should be sent to a qualified enterprise for dismantling and scrapping when it runs for 600,000 kilometers. And scrap vehicles’ engines, steering gear, transmission, front and rear axles and frame are forbidden to be sold illegally and should be recycled as scrap metal. The vehicle owner can get the residual value of the recycled scrap metal. However, this provision is poorly enforced.
Vehicle consumption becomes increasingly popular in China with the development of economy and increase of income. China had ranked first in vehicle production and sales volume for nine consecutive years from 2009 to 2017. And the vehicle reserves keep rising. China’s vehicle reserves reached 217 million at the end of 2017, ranking second in the world. It is estimated that China will surpass the U.S. to have the largest vehicle reserves in the world in 10 years. As the average vehicle age increases, scrap vehicle recycling has become one of the social concerns. On the assumption that the service life of passenger vehicles is between 8 to 10 years, the number of scrap vehicles had exceeded 6 million by 2017 and will grow at an annual rate over 10%. However, only 1.47 million scrap vehicles were recycled in 2017. Many scrap vehicles are still being used or were illegally disposed. For example, some of them were reassembled or refurbished to be sold as second-hand vehicles.
Owing to the poor industry regulation, legal scrap vehicle disposal has been affected by the illegal one. China’s annual recycling volume only accounts for 0.5%-1% of the vehicle reserves, which is much lower than 5%-7% in developed countries. Because of the quota on the number of scrap vehicle recyclers, the numbers of registered scrap vehicle recyclers and recycling outlets were 660 and 2,465 respectively at the end of 2016, having a wide gap with the fast-growing number of scrap vehicles. To promote the development of the industry, the Chinese government is improving relevant policies. It is expected that the new version of Regulations on Vehicle Recycling Management will cancel the quota on the number of scrap vehicle recyclers, and allow the circulation of scrap vehicles’ engine, steering gear, transmission, front and rear axles and frame to qualified manufacturers for remanufacturing. This policy change will greatly expand the market of scrap vehicle recycling.
The combination with “internet+” will help legal recyclers to deal with the penetration of illegal recyclers. Moreover, e-commerce platforms will facilitate the recycler’s communication with vehicle owners and downstream parts remanufacturers to increase the industry’s profitability. The broad market prospect and favorable policy environment will attract a great deal of capital to the industry. In 2022, the scrap vehicle recycling volume will exceed 5 million and the market size will exceed CNY 50 billion, representing a CAGR of 28.1% from 2018 to 2022.

In 2017, the sales volume of new energy vehicles totaled 777,000, increasing by 53.3% YOY and accounting for 2.7% of the total vehicle sales in China. In 2017, the sales volume of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles reached 652,000 and 125,000 respectively.
The boom in the electric vehicle industry will lead to the substantial growth of lithium batteries and relevant industries. In 2017, China, Japan and South Korea became the power battery production centers in the world. Chinese enterprises took six places of the top 10 power battery manufacturers and three places of the top 5. China has grown into a significant li-ion power battery manufacturer. From the perspective of li-ion power battery shipments, the industry is highly concentrated with the CR10 reaching approximately 80% in 2017. The top li-ion power battery enterprises include Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd., BYD Company Limited, OptimumNano Energy Co., Ltd., Hefei Guoxuan High-Tech Power Energy Co., Ltd., Shenzhen BAK Battery Co., Ltd. and Farasis Energy (Ganzhou) Co., Ltd. It is noteworthy that the CR5 of the Li-ion power battery industry was up to 67.86% in 2016. In recent years, top li-ion power battery manufacturers expanded production capacity one after another, and formed alliances with downstream automakers (for example, CATL + SAIC and Guoxuan + BAIC) to gain scale advantage when seizing customers.
There are clear expectations for new energy vehicles with the government’s great policy support and the upcoming “Measures on Parallel Administration of Passenger Car Enterprise Average Fuel Consumption and New-Energy Vehicle Credits”. Moreover, no disruptive technology will appear in the power battery industry for the time being. Over the coming 3-5 years, it will be difficult to change the industry structure dominated by ternary batteries and supplemented by lithium iron phosphate batteries. At present, the industry focuses are placed on expanding production capacity for scale advantage and cooperating with automakers for market advantage. The development of new energy vehicles is an important driving force for the development of China’s li-ion power battery industry in which the policy environment and economic environment also play an important role. It is expected that li-ion power battery production in China will exceed 150GWh in 2022. There is still a large growth potential for China’s li-ion power battery market.

Description
In 2017, the sales volume of new energy vehicles in major countries reached 1.42 million with a YOY increase of 89.3%; the sales volume of new energy vehicles in China reached 777,000 with a YOY increase of 53.3%. The lithium industry experienced a stable growth before the prosperity of the new energy vehicle industry. However, there is a growing demand for lithium as the new energy vehicle industry booms in recent years.
In 2017, the global lithium salt production was about 235,400 tons, increasing by 21.5% YOY; China’s lithium salt production was about 123,400 tons, increasing by 43.5% YOY.
In 2017, the global demand for lithium resources was about 220,000 tons, increasing by about 9% YOY. The growth was mainly because of the increasing production volume of new energy vehicles whose demand for lithium resources reached about 45,000 tons with a YOY increase about 44%.
According to CRI, in 2017, the growth rate of China’s lithium battery industry rose significantly with the production and sales volume of new energy vehicles increasing by over 50%, the production of lithium-ion batteries increasing by over 40%, and the total production of cathode materials for lithium batteries increasing by over 50%.
At the end of 2017, China’s lithium salt capacity was about 250,000 tons including 178,000 tons of lithium carbonate, 54,000 tons of lithium hydroxide and 18,000 tons of lithium chloride, increasing by 47%. In the second half of 2017, Shandong Ruifu Lithium Co., Ltd. put into pilot production the lithium carbonate production line with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons. In early September, Jiangxi Jinhui Lithium Co., Ltd. launched the production line which can extract 10,000 tons of industrial grade lithium carbonate from lepidolite every year. In November 2017, Qinghai HXR Lithium Tech Ltd. put into trial production the lithium carbonate production line with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons. Jiangsu Baozong & Baoda Pharmachem Co., Ltd., H-zone Lithium Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangte Silver Lithium New Energy Co., Ltd., etc. completed lithium salt capacity expansion projects and put them into operation.
The global lithium resources and lithium mining enterprises highly concentrate in Chile, Argentina, Australia and the U.S. China is rich in lithium resources but is weak in lithium exploitation. Therefore, China has a low production of lithium. For example, the production of lithium metal was only about 2,500 tons in 2017. Large amount of imports is needed every year. Some leading lithium enterprises in China have obtained lithium resources from abroad. For instance, Tianqi Lithium Corporation has acquired Tailison, and Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. has acquired Mt Marion. The market is highly concentrated in China with Tianqi Lithium Corporation and Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd., etc. taking up a huge market share.
There are abundant explored lithium resources in the world. However, the poor resource endowment, imbalanced distribution, limited development and extracting technologies and the production cycle restricted by economic and natural conditions have led to the mismatch between supply and demand in a certain period and a rise in the prices of lithium resources.

Description
Glyphosate is an herbicide invented by Monsanto in 1970. Its patent expired in 2000. The wide use of glyphosate results from the enlargement of transgenic crop cultivation area. As the most widely used herbicide in the world, glyphosate is mainly applied to transgenic crops such as soybeans, corn and cotton because of low toxicity, no residue and broad spectrum. At present, the global glyphosate production capacity concentrates in China. In 2017, the global glyphosate production capacity was 1,065,000 tons, including 380,000 tons of Monsanto and 685,000 tons of Chinese enterprises. Due to China’s supply-side reform and environmental supervision, China’s glyphosate industry is more integrated and concentrated. The glyphosate industry is a typical polluting industry. The production of glyphosate can generate plenty of waste water. Therefore, it is unlikely to expand production capacity substantially within a short period under current environment protection pressure.
According to CRI, there is a stable increase in global transgenic crop cultivation area in recent years. In 2016, the transgenic crop cultivation area was 190 million hectares, increasing by 3.0% YOY. Correspondingly, the global sales of glyphosate exceeded USD 5 billion in 2017. China is a major glyphosate exporter in the world. Over 80% of China-made glyphosate is exported to account for over 60% of the global supply. The output of glyphosate in China increased from 316,000 tons in 2010 to about 505,000 tons in 2017. In 2017, China exported over 300,000 tons of glyphosate technical, which satisfied more than half of the global glyphosate demand.
At present, the glyphosate synthesis process is mature, and the technical barriers in the industry are low. However, the Chinese government is tightening the environmental supervision over the glyphosate industry in recent years because it is difficult to deal with the large amount of wastewater generated in the glyphosate production process. Many small and medium-sized enterprises quit owing to the high costs of four-round environmental supervision and continued market downturn. In the past two years, the increasing industry concentration led to integrated factories of raw materials and products that have cost and resource advantages as well as non-integrated factories that have certain scale advantage. The competition in the industry is becoming increasingly fierce.
The strengthened enforcement of environmental protection laws has not only increased the production costs of glyphosate enterprises but also tightened the supply and increased the price of glycine, the upstream raw material of glyphosate. Driven by higher costs of raw materials and production, the market price of glyphosate grows higher but the profitability becomes lower. It should be noted that the global glyphosate demand will continue to grow in the future as the continued expansion of transgenic crop cultivation area broadens the market space of glyphosate. In addition, China has forbidden the use of highly toxic herbicides such as paraquat but the transgenic crop cultivation area is expanding. Therefore, the domestic glyphosate demand will also continue to grow.

Description
China started late on the laser industry. With the speedy development of equipment manufacturing industry, China’s laser industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years. China is an active manufacturing market and a major market of industrial laser equipment. The industrial laser industry has become a high-profile industry and achieved fast market growth in China because of the country’s macroeconomic development, manufacturing upgrading and policy support. In 2015, China overtook Europe as the world’s largest laser consumer market for laser devices for the first time. In 2017, the market size of laser devices in China exceeded USD 3 billion, accounting for about 1/3 of the global market.
At present, lasers are mainly applied in downstream industries such as laser processing and medical treatment. In 2017, scientific research and development accounted for 12% of the total applications, material processing accounted for 32%, communications accounted for 12%, information application accounted for 14%, medical application accounted for 20%, and measurement and other applications accounted for 9% and 1% respectively.
Central China, the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Rim have grown into important global laser industry bases as well as clusters of laser enterprises, laser research institutions and laser application factories which have built a complete industry chain composed of basic laser materials, laser optical devices, laser devices, laser kits, laser application development systems and public service platforms. The increasingly mature industrial supporting system gives market support to and is conducive to the sound development of China’s laser industry.

Description
The global consumption of edible vegetable oils has been growing since 1991. China, the European Union and India are the top 3 consumers of edible vegetable oils. The per capita consumption of edible vegetable oils keeps growing in China with the development of China’s economy and the improvement of people’s living standard. It increased from 7.7 kg in 1996 to 25 kg in 2016, exceeding the global per capita consumption.
According to CRI, the edible vegetable oils consumed in China are mainly soybean oil, palm oil, rapeseed oil and peanut oil which account for approximately 90% of the total consumption. Rapeseed oil and soybean oil are most popular among Chinese residents while minor oils such as olive oil, corn oil and sunflower seed oil are becoming more acceptable with the improvement in health consciousness and consumption trend. Households and the catering industry are the major consumers of rapeseed oil and soybean oil while the food industry prefers lower-priced palm oil to save costs.
Transnational enterprises such as Yihai Kerry have a competitive edge on China’s edible vegetable oil market. There are also large-scale domestic edible oil processing enterprises such as Shandong Luhua Group Co., Ltd. and COFCO Corporation.
According to CRI, the cost of oil crops planting is high in China but the yield value is low. China is heavily import-dependent in the raw materials for edible vegetable oil processing. In addition, the domestic edible vegetable oil technology is limited to primary crushing, which leads to low added value of products and low overall profitability of the industry. As Chinese consumers require more in the health benefits and nutritional value of edible oils, high-end oils such as olive oil and sunflower seed oil are gaining market share, which brings about increasingly fierce competition to the industry. Top quality enterprises are accelerating brand building and sales network distribution, which makes it more difficult for new enterprises to enter the industry. There is an excess supply of edible vegetable oils in China with the expanding production capacity of domestic oil processing enterprises. It is expected that there will be no sharp price increase in the future.
Overall, the bulk vegetable oil industry is less profitable and even loss-making due to the serious overcapacity and intense market competition while minor oils such as olive oil and corn oil have a huge growth potential. The structure of vegetable oil consumption is being adjusted with an increasing demand for customized, high-quality and wholesome vegetable oils.

Description
China’s auto industry has been growing rapidly since China joined the WTO. Since 2009, China has ranked first in automobile production and sales volume in the world for nine consecutive years. China’s automobile penetration has also increased at a rate of more than 10% every year. At the end of 2017, China’s automobile penetration was 217 million, ranking second in the world. Automobile maintenance is a promising industry arising from the increase of automobile penetration in China. Unlike automobile repair, automobile maintenance includes daily automobile maintenance as well as light maintenance services such as additional maintenance, automobile accessories, automobile beauty, quick repair and automobile modification.
According to CRI, the profit of automobile aftermarket only accounts for 20% of that of China’s automobile industry chain and is much lower than that in developed countries. In 2017, the market size of China’s automobile maintenance industry reached CNY 889.2 billion, representing a CAGR of 27.3% from 2013 to 2017. The market grew rapidly.
The concentration rate is low in China’s automobile maintenance industry with the standardization of services and product quality. Traditional auto manufacturers, auto distributors and auto accessories manufacturers are developing automobile maintenance in order to deepen the industry chain by brand awareness and store coverage. In addition, the broad industry space and great policy support have spawned some independent third-party maintenance suppliers which win a large number of users by accurate market positioning, alternative maintenance services and user-friendly prices. Younger consumers and diversified demand have led to a mass of O2O automobile maintenance suppliers such as Tuhu.cn, Qccr.com and Chexiang.com. They have become the new powers that dominate the development of China’s automobile maintenance industry because of easy and fast services and transparent prices.
It is estimated that the market size will exceed 1.7 trillion in 2022, and the CAGR will exceed 14% from 2018 to 2022. In the coming years, China’s automobile maintenance industry will have a good prospect with in-depth industry development, more market players, lower maintenance costs, stronger overall competitiveness based on chain operation, higher automobile penetration and older average age of vehicles.

Since China joined the WTO, the auto production, sales and reserves have been growing with China’s economic development. At the end of 2017, China’s auto reserves were about 156 per thousand people, far less than that in developed countries. Therefore, there is a huge growth potential.
According to CRI, the auto consumer finance industry has begun to develop in China with the increase of residents’ income and the policy support of the government. In mature markets, auto finance accounts for 20%-25% profits of the auto value chain while in China the proportion is less than 10%. The market size of China’s auto finance industry reached about CNY 900 billion in 2017. Despite the small market size and low profitability, there is a lot of room for growth in the future.
Market players include commercial banks, auto finance companies, financial leasing companies and Internet platforms. The traditional dominators are banks that have traditional capital advantage and auto manufacturers’ auto finance companies that have financing advantage and auto resources. E-commerce platforms have become the new cradles of auto finance with active financing on the primary market. Both traditional market players and independent Internet auto finance companies can reduce the costs of customer attraction by advantage of Internet platforms’ visitor volume, and increase operation efficiency by big-data-based analysis on consumer credit and enterprise operation. Because of limited autos and funds, most Internet platforms function as media.
Current policies are favorable to China’s auto finance industry. The Chinese government encourages innovation in consumer finance, which opens more channels for auto finance. In addition, new-round auto demand arises as auto consumption gradually shifts from the first and second tier cities to the third and fourth tier cities and rural areas, which brings about more market opportunities to the auto finance industry. Other driving forces include the development of auto consumer finance market, huge investment, frequent financing activities, business efficiency increased by Internet and financial technologies, and the rapid growth of new energy vehicle market. It is expected that the market size of auto finance in China will exceed CNY 1,500 billion in 2022.

With economic growth and strong policy support, China’s electric vehicle industry has experienced rapid growth. From 2013 to 2017, the production of electric vehicles in China increased from 18,000 in 2013 to 794,000 in 2017 at a compound growth rate of 159.4%, and the sales increased from 18,000 in 2013 to 777,000 in 2017 at a compound growth rate of 157.6%.
The development of charging piles expands as the sales and reserves of electric vehicles grows rapidly in China. From 2013 to May 2018, the number of charging piles in China increased from more than 20,000 to more than 260,000. The number of charging piles in China is increasing rapidly but the growth rate is far behind that of electric vehicles, which means that there is a huge demand for charging piles in China. In 2017, the size of China’s charging pile market exceeded CNY 20 billion.
It is estimated that the sales of electric vehicles will continue to increase in China from 2018 to 2022 with the government’s policy support and the price reduction resulting from cost reduction. Critical to electric vehicles, the development of charging facilities will benefit fully from the fast growth of electric vehicles. The government’s policy support provides the charging pile industry with a plenty of market opportunities. And the immaturity of the industry also gives promise of huge development potential. In addition, the charging pile industry is a new industry that requires constant exploration. According to the NDRC’s Guidelines for Development of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (2015-2020), the development goal of China’s charging infrastructure is to build 12,000 charging stations and 4.8 million charging piles by 2020 to meet the charging needs of 5 million electric vehicles nationwide. The total investment in charging piles will exceed CNY 184 billion if the number of new energy vehicles reaches 5 million, the production capacity of electric vehicles reaches 2 million, and the total production and sales volume exceeds 5 million in 2020. Therefore, there will be a large growth potential for China’s charging pile market from 2018 to 2022.
