China’s Gold Import

China has been the world’s largest producer and consumer of gold for many years. Because of the strong demand for gold jewelry, as well as gold bars and coins for investment purposes, China still needs to import a considerable amount of gold every year.

In 2021, China imported 804.7 tons of gold (refers to unwrought gold for non-monetary use, the same below), up 296.8% year-on-year, and the import value was US$46.3 billion, up 324.8% year-on-year. According to CRI’s analysis, in the first three quarters of 2022, China imported 890.8 tons of gold, up 71.6% year-on-year, with an import value of US$51.31 billion, up 71.7% year-on-year.

In 2021, China imported gold from a total of 25 countries and regions. According to CRI’s analysis, China’s main sources of gold imports by volume are Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong, China and Singapore. Among them, Switzerland is China’s largest source of gold imports. 374.3 tons of gold will be imported from Switzerland in 2021, accounting for 46.5% of the total import volume and US$21.50 billion, accounting for 46.4% of the total import value.

As Chinese residents prefer to buy gold jewelry, while some of them collect gold bars and coins as a means of preserving value. However, there is limited room for growth in China’s domestic gold production, so CRI expects that China will still import a large amount of gold every year from 2023-2032.

China’s Lithium Carbonate Import

Currently, lithium carbonate is mainly used in the production of low and medium nickel cathode materials (NCM 111, 523 and some 622) in LiFePO4 and ternary materials. With the development of China’s new energy vehicle industry, the demand for lithium carbonate in the Chinese market continues to rise. Due to the limited local lithium resources in China, the import of lithium carbonate into China has been rising rapidly in recent years.

In 2021, China imported 81,000 tons of lithium carbonate, up 61.7% year-on-year, with imports of US$560 million, up 115.4%. In the first three quarters of 2022, China imported 105000 tons of lithium carbonate, up 76.5% year-on-year, with imports of US$5.05 billion, up 1404.3%.

Among them, Chile is China’s main source of lithium carbonate imports. In 2021, China imports 64,000 tons of lithium carbonate from Chile, accounting for 78.7% of total imports, and imports of US$390 million, accounting for 69.4% of total imports.

China is a large consumer of lithium carbonate, and the rapid development of new energy and other downstream industries has vigorously boosted the demand for lithium carbonate, but China’s domestic supply of lithium carbonate is insufficient, and it needs to rely on imports to meet domestic production needs. CRI expects that China’s lithium carbonate imports are expected to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

According to CRI’s analysis, China’s major sources of nickel ore imports by import volume are the Philippines, New Caledonia and Indonesia. Among them, the Philippines is China’s largest source of nickel ore imports. 2021, China imports 39.01.0 million tons of nickel ore from the Philippines, accounting for 89.6% of the total import volume and US$3.0 billion, accounting for 67.9% of the total import value.

China is the world’s largest nickel consumer, but China’s local nickel ore resources are scarce and nickel ore is highly dependent on imports.
Southeast Asian countries are the main sources of natural rubber imports for China. According to CRI’s analysis, in 2021, China’s major sources of natural rubber imports by import volume were Thailand, Malaysia, Cote d’Ivoire, Vietnam and Indonesia. Among them, Thailand is China’s largest natural rubber import source. 2021, China imported 1.129 million tons of natural rubber from Thailand, accounting for 51.1% of the total natural rubber import volume and US$1.99 billion in import value, accounting for 51.7% of natural rubber import value.

As China’s economy grows, market demand for natural rubber continues to be released. China has been the world’s largest natural rubber consumer for many years, but China’s domestic natural rubber production capacity can only meet less than half of the domestic market demand, and most natural rubber needs to rely on imports. CRI expects that China’s natural rubber imports are expected to continue to grow in 2023-2032.

China’s imports of grain sorghum can be divided into two categories: grain sorghum for cultivation and other grain sorghum. According to CRI’s analysis, other grain sorghum is the main import species for China. In 2021, China imported other grain sorghum from four countries. CRI’s analysis shows that the U.S., Argentina, and Australia are the main sources of China’s grain sorghum imports by import volume.

Among them, the United States is China’s largest source of grain sorghum imports. In 2021, China imported 6.547 million tons of grain sorghum of U.S., accounting for 69.5% of total imports that year, and US$2.12 billion, accounting for 70.1% of total imports that year.

In recent years, China’s sorghum processing industry has grown rapidly, with grain sorghum being widely used as a feedstock, brewing and biofuel ingredient. China’s domestic grain sorghum production is unable to meet domestic demand and its dependence on grain sorghum imports is high, making China the world’s top importer of sorghum. CRI estimates that China’s sorghum imports are expected to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

With the development of China’s economy and rising living standards, the demand for wool in the Chinese market is on the rise. Due to the limited arable land, there is little room for growth in China’s local wool production, and China needs to import a large amount of wool every year. China is the world’s largest producer of textiles and clothing. China imports large quantities of textile materials such as cotton and wool every year.
