Depression is the fourth leading disease in the world and is expected to become the first by 2030. However, the medical prevention and treatment of depression in China is still of low recognition rate, which is less than 20% of Chinese hospitals at all levels. Moreover, less than 20% of Chinese patients suffering from depression have received related medication.

According to the WHO, more than 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression, with a growth rate of about 18% in the last decade.

As is estimated, by 2021, the number of patients with depression in China is about 95 million. According to CRI’s market research, as a result of the impact of COVID-19 and the decreasing average price, the sales value of China’s escitalopram market in 2020 declined to approximately CNY329 million (USD50.6 million), with a CAGR of about -1.9% from 2016 to 2020.

Since H. Lundbeck A/S’s Lexapro is more expensive than generic drugs in the Chinese market, its market share has been declining, with a market share of around 66% in 2020 and is expected to continue to decline from 2021 to 2025. Companies with a relatively large market share of escitalopram in China include Sichuan Kelun Pharmaceutical, Jewim Pharmaceutical, Hunan Dongting Pharmaceutical and Jinhua CONBA.

CRI expects that the number of depression patients in China will keep growing in the future due to increasing stresses of everyday life and changing interpersonal relationships resulted from factors like national economic development and rising urbanization. Suffering from depression is unfortunate, but if timely treatment is given, patients are able to return to normal life and work.

There is no complete cure for IBD. Dabigatran etexilate is a precursor drug of dabigatran that is enzymatically hydrolyzed in vivo to the coagulant-active dabigatran, which exerts its anticoagulant effect through direct inhibition of thrombin. Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths. 19.29 million new cancer cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2020, 4.57 million of which were in China, accounting for 23.7%. Gefitinib was recommended by the Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Version 1.2020, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines and the Guidelines of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) on Treatment of Primary Lung Cancer (2019) as a first-line drug for treatment for patients with EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer, and has been included in the Category B in China’s medical insurance in 2019 and the National Essential Medicines List (2018 edition).

Before the launch of domestic generic drugs in China, the only gefitinib available in the market was the original drug Iressa with a high price. In 2017, the first generic drug from Qilu Pharmaceutical was approved for marketing in China to compete with Iressa, followed by generic drugs from Chia Tai Tianqing Pharmaceutical and Sichuan Kelun Pharmaceutical, Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine and Yangtze River Pharmaceutical.

In September 2019, in the Chinese government’s centralized drug-procurement, the gefitinib drugs of Qilu Pharmaceutical, Chia Tai Tianqing Pharmaceutical and AstraZeneca were selected at prices of CNY257, CNY450 and CNY547, with the specification of 25 mg (a box of 10 tablets). The price of AstraZeneca’s Iressa was reduced by 76%.

According to CRI’s market research, before 2019, the sales value of China’s gefitinib market kept growing year by year. In 2019, the average price of gefitinib decreased significantly due to the Chinese government’s centralized drug-procurement program. Therefore, although the sales volume of gefitinib in China increased in 2019, its sales value declined greatly.

In 2020, both of them decreased due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which impacted the proper function of Chinese healthcare institutions. The sales value of gefitinib in China was approximately CNY312 million (USD48.1 million) in 2020, with a CAGR of about 1.3% from 2016 to 2020.

According to CRI’s market research, although AstraZeneca’s original drug, Iressa, is much more expensive than generic drugs from local Chinese companies, it still held more than 70% share of the market in 2020 in terms of sales value.

CRI expects that from 2021 to 2025, China’s gefitinib market will show a recovery growth in both sales volume and value due to the effective control of COVID-19 and the resumption of proper operation of healthcare facilities.

Peptic ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding are common diseases in China with a large number of patients. Due to the fast pace of modern life, accelerated urbanization and great mental stress, the number of cases is increasing year by year, and the incidence of digestive diseases accounts for 10%-20% of the total Chinese population with extremely high recurrence rate.

Roxatidine is a long-acting H2RA with a stronger-than-ranitidine acid-suppressive effect and a mucosal protective effect. The effective dose of roxatidine is 150 mg/day, which is three to six times more effective than cimetidine and twice as effective as ranitidine. Clinical data show that in the comparison of H2 receptor antagonists for peptic ulcer recurrence rate, the rate is the smallest when using roxatidine.

Roxatidine is a fourth generation H2 receptor blocker and is available in oral and injectable dosage forms.

Roxatidine, originally developed by ASKA Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, was first marketed in Japan in 1986 in the oral form for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, reflux esophagitis and gastritis; the injectable form, first marketed in Japan in 1995 for the treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and pre-anesthesia, was one of the few drugs used for peptic ulcers and bleeding in hospitalized patients.

According to CRI’s market research, the roxatidine from the original developer, ASKA Pharmaceutical is not marketed in China. As of August 2021, only two companies, Beijing Sihuan Pharmaceutical and HPGC Bioengineering have obtained the approval for manufacturing roxatidine in the Chinese market, with Beijing Sihuan Pharmaceutical occupies the most market share.

Up till now, the only dosage form of roxatidine available in the Chinese market is injection, and it is expected that oral preparations may be available in the next few years.

According to CRI’s market research, the market size of roxatidine in China kept growing from 2016 to 2020. In 2020, despite the impact of COVID-19, the sales value of roxatidine in the Chinese market increased to CNY428 million (approximately USD65.8 million), with a CAGR of 37.3% from 2016 to 2020.

CRI expects that from 2021 to 2025, the market size of roxatidine in China will continue to grow as the number of patients with digestive diseases in China keep increasing, and the average sales price of roxatidine in China will decrease due to the competitive market while both sales volume and value will continue to rise.
