Description
According to CRI, the quality of hazelnuts produced in China is generally poor and the yield is low. Therefore, hazelnuts consumed in China still rely on imports. According to conservative estimates, the annual consumption of hazelnuts in China is more than 100 kilotons, while the annual output is only about 10 kilotons.
According to CRI, from 2017 to 2019, China’s hazelnut imports increased significantly, with the import volume increasing from 3,997 tons to 19,948 tons, and the import volume increased from 29.04 million US dollars to 69.34 million US dollars. In 2020, the total import value from January to June was only 16.99 million US dollars. And the overall import price of hazelnuts has generally declined.
According to CRI, China’s imports of unshelled hazelnuts increased significantly, from 947.50 tons in 2017 to 16,954 tons in 2019, while the import volume and import value of shelled hazelnut in China decreased slightly from 2017 to 2019.
According to CRI, the major sources of China’s imported hazelnuts are the United States and Turkey. From April 2, 2018, China imposed a 15% tariff on hazelnuts produced in the United States, which impacted American hazelnuts exports to China
According to CRI, most imported hazelnuts came through Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang Customs in China.

According to CRI, thanks to the rapid development of the Internet industry and take out delivery mode, the coffee market in China is growing rapidly, especially freshly ground coffee market.

Coffee Bean Imports

From 2017 to 2019, the total import of coffee beans remained stable, with the highest total import in 2018, reaching 294.26 million US dollars.
According to CRI, affected by the COVID-19 in the first half of 2020, the import volume of coffee beans was less than half of that in the previous years.
According to CRI, the average import price of coffee beans increased from USD 4,005.41 per ton in 2017 to USD 4,474.38 in 2018, and then dropped to USD 4,134.05 in 2019.

In the first half of 2020, the price rose again, with an average of USD 4,476.09 per ton.

The Chinese market divides the imported coffee beans into four categories according to whether they are roasted and whether they are decaffeinated.
Green coffee beans are the main products imported from China, roasted coffee beans rank second.

According to CRI, major sources of imported coffee beans are Vietnam, Malaysia, Brazil, Columbia, Indonesia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, etc.

Since China’s per capita consumption of coffee is far lower than that of countries with mature coffee culture, there is still a lot of room for development. The annual growth rate of coffee consumption in China is expected to maintain at about 8.3% in the next few years.

According to CRI, as for the import of coffee beans, due to the impact of the epidemic situation, it is expected that the import volume of 2020 would decline compared to the previous years, rebound after the economic recovery in 2021, and stabilize at 64-65 kilotons in the following years. The import value is expected to be close to USD 300 million in 2024.

In 2018, China imported the largest number of avocados, reaching 43.86 kilotons, with an import value of USD 133.38 million. Then it has slightly decreased in 2019 and 2020.

Generally, the import price of avocado has been declining from USD 3,337.31 per ton in 2017 to USD 2,689.67 in 2020.

According to CRI, China’s imported avocados are mainly from Chile, Mexico and Peru. The prices of avocados from Philippine and New Zealand are relatively high. And most avocados are imported though Shanghai and Guangdong Customs.

According to CRI, in 2019, production of domestic cherries was 1.13 million tons in China, while the import volume of cherries were 193.59 thousand tons, which means 14.68% import dependence.
From 2017 to 2019, the total import amount increased from USD 771.26 million to USD 1.40 billion.
Although affected by the COVID-19 in early 2020, the import volume of cherries was still on the rise, increasing by 28.37% compared to the same period in 2019. In the first five months alone, total imports amounted to USD 1.20 billion.
According to CRI, imported fresh cherries were classified to European sour cherries and other cherries in China. Only a small amount of cherries was imported from Canada in 2017 and then stopped.
In recent years, most imported cherries into China are other cherries.
According to CRI, Chile is a big cherry producing country and always the first source of cherries imported to China.
Imported cherries in China were mainly from Chile, the USA and Canada previously. However, China Customs adjusted the quality standards for imported cherries so products from Turkey, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have also entered the Chinese market rapidly, which means the competition is fiercer.
According to CRI, it is estimated that the import volume of cherries in 2020 would exceed 300 thousand tons. By 2024, the import volume would exceed 430 thousand tons, with a market value of about USD 3.05 billion.

According to CRI, there are only a few cobalt resources in China, the total reserve of cobalt ores in China is 470 kilotons, so it heavily depends on imports.

According to CRI, China’s cobalt ores and concentrates imports increased from 100.99 kilotons in 2017 to 136.10 kilotons in 2018, and then decreased to 90.89 tons in 2019, with a large fluctuation.

In the first half of 2020, the import volume is only 26.81 tons in China, less than one third of that in the whole year of 2019 due to the COVID-19.
Cobalt minerals occur in concentrations high enough to support economic extraction in several diverse settings, all of which display very different examples of mineralization. The most common groups of minerals are sulphides, sulfosalts, arsenides and oxides.

It shows oligopoly in terms of cobalt resources. The market share of the three top companies was up to 40%. The global upstream cobalt resources are mainly controlled by multinational mining enterprises such as Glencore, Molybdenum and Eurasian Resources.

According to CRI, the world’s cobalt resources are rich, but cobalt resource concentration is high, mainly distributed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (the DRC) and Australia. The DRC is always the biggest source of China’s cobalt imports.

According to CRI, there are two categories of portable computers exported by China: Laptops and Tablets.
From 2017 to 2019, China’s laptop computer export volume was relatively stable, maintaining at about 140 million units per year.
At the beginning of 2020, the economy of various industries was generally hit by the COVID-19, but laptop exports increased by 9.46% due to the WFH (work from home).
Different from laptops, in general, the export volume of China’s tablet computers showed an overall downward trend. Besides the export price of tablets is lower than that of laptops, and it fluctuates more. In 2017, the average price of tablets was USD 168.82, and in 2018, it increased by 16.28% to USD 196.31. The average price in the first five months of 2020 is USD 224.08.
Most of Chinese laptops were exported to the United States, while tablets were mainly exported to Hong Kong and the United States.
According to CRI, more than one third of laptops came from Chongqing province, then Jiangsu and Sichuan.
As for tablets, nearly half of them were from Guangdong.
China has no special restrictions on the export of computers, but the United States imposed an additional 15% tariff on computers from China during the Sino-US trade war.

According to CRI, in recent years, the rapid expansion of China’s airlines has benefited from China’s demographic dividend and economic development, but the traditional product service concepts, segmented business processes and department settings, as well as relatively old core systems, limit the innovation ability of the aviation industry.
Since 2020, the global epidemic has brought unprecedented impact to the aviation industry. Many airlines have experienced suspension, even bankruptcy and restructuring. The whole industry is facing a reshuffle.
The passenger traffic volume of the whole industry in February 2020 decreased by 84.5% compared to the same period last year, and the loss of the aviation industry reached about RMB 21 billion, the largest loss in a single month in history.
China’s civil aviation industry is gradually recovering from novel coronavirus since March 2020. However, it will take a long time to fully recover to the level before the outbreak.
In the first five months of 2020, the aviation industry was hit hard by the pandemic. Compared to the same period in 2019, the import volume decreased by 84.53%.

According to CRI, due to the lack of aircraft manufacturing capacity of Chinese local enterprises, it is estimated that China’s civil aviation aircraft will mainly rely on imports from 2020 to 2024.
Considering the development of China’s aviation industry and the influencing factors of the epidemic situation, it is estimated that the CAGR of China’s civil aircraft imports would be about 4.38% from 2020 to 2024, reaching 762 by 2024.
According to CRI, moreover, it is estimated that it would be difficult for China’s aviation industry to recover to the level of 2019 from 2020 to 2024. As a result, the number of medium, large and super large aircrafts imported into the Chinese market will decline. With the development of China’s general aviation market, the number of small aircraft imported into the Chinese market would continue to rise.

According to CRI, from August 2018 to July 2019, China’s Almond production was 43 kilotons.
Almond in China is only intensively cultivated in Hetian area of Kashgar, Xinjiang province. Almond consumption highly depends on imports in China because of the large gap between the demand and the limited domestic supply.
According to CRI, from 2017 to 2019, the import volume and value of almonds increased year by year in China. But in the first half of 2020, the import volume was only 10.46 kilotons in China, less than half of that in 2019. Most almonds are imported through Guangdong Customs.
Chinese market divides almonds into two categories according to whether they are shelled or not.
According to CRI, California is the largest almond supplier in the world. More than 80% almonds in the world are produced in California. Thus, the United States was the largest source of China’s almond imports before the Sino-US trade war. China imposed a 50% tariff on American almonds in 2018.
After that, Chinese importers looked for Australian and Thai almonds as substitutes, and Australia replaced the USA as major source of imported almonds in China.
