<p>In recent years, with the development of Chinese economy, the papermaking industry has continued to grow. In 2000, the total output of <a href="https://www.cri-report.com/southeast-asia-paper-industry/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="2002" title="Research Report on Southeast Asia Paper Industry 2023-2032" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a> and paperboard was about 30.5 million tons and increased to 125.42 million tons in 2017, with the CAGR up to 8.7% from 2000 to 2017.</p>
<p>According to the analysis of CRI, the sub-sectors of the papermaking industry present diverse prospects. With the rise of internet media, especially the popularity of mobile Internet apps, traditional printing media like newspapers, magazines and books have gradually declined in circulation, leading the demand for and production of newspapers to constantly drop.</p>
<p>For another, the improvement in the living standards of Chinese residents has driven up the production of <a href="https://www.cri-report.com/china-household-paper-industry-overview-2017-2021/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="71" title="China Household Paper Industry Overview, 2017-2021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">household paper</a>. <p>The analysis of CRI shows that in recent years, wood pulp and waste pulp has taken up bigger shares in the raw materials for papermaking while non-wood pulp has been on the decline. Waste paper plays an increasingly important role in the development of the papermaking industry of China. The import volume of waste paper increased from 2.516 million tons in 1999 to 29.28 million tons in 2015 with the CAGR reaching 16.6% from 1999 to 2015.</p>
<p>From 2016 to 2017, the amount of imported waste paper decreased due to the stricter policies of the government. Since Mar. 1st, 2018, <em>Provision on Imported Waster Paper for Environmental Protection</em> has taken effect. The new standards on the impurity rate of the imported paper have also been carried out, decreasing from 1.5% to 0.5%.</p>
<p>The bar raised by the new standards poses great impacts on the amount and p<a href="https://www.cri-report.com/vietnams-rice-industry-2016-2030/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1966" title="Research Report on Vietnam&#039;s Rice Industry 2016-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a> of the imported waste paper. The new standard will lift the cost of sorting waste paper and thus affect its sales in China, the largest consumer in the world.</p>
<p>In terms of the approval of quotas for waste paper imports, many batches of small amount are adopted. Large enterprises like Panlong Paper, Liwen Paper, and Shanying Paper gain greater advantages to secure the quotas. In 2017, the top 5 papermaking enterprises obtained 62.6% of the quota. In 2018, the quota of large enterprises is expected to increase. Due to the decrease in imported waste paper, the p<a href="https://www.cri-report.com/vietnams-rice-industry-2016-2030/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1966" title="Research Report on Vietnam&#039;s Rice Industry 2016-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a> in the Chinese market will be lifted, which consequently drives up the cost of papermaking.</p>
<p>CRI report also indicates that Chinese papermaking enterprises are in great quantities in low market concentration. By the end of 2017, there were about 2,700 enterprises making papers and paper products with more than CNY 20 million in annual sales. The average annual capacity of those enterprises was less than 50,000 tons, far lagging behind the international level. In 2017, the number of enterprises which made paper of more than 1 million tons was less than 30.</p>
<p>From the perspective of the regional distribution of paper-making enterprises in 2017, the output of paper and paperboard in Guangdong was 21.7774 million tons, ranking first in China, and the output in Shandong was 21.7750 million tons, ranking second. The total output of paper and paperboard in the two provinces accounted for one third in the country.</p>
<p>Now it has been the trend for papermakers to make investment or merger across regions, paring down the regionality. For example, <a href="http://www.chenmingpaper.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chenming Paper</a> and Huatai Paper established factories in Shandong, Guangdong, Hubei, and Anhui. Nine Dragons Paper and Lee &amp; Paper funded factories in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Tianjin, Chongqing, Fujian, and Sichuan. In another case, Hengan Group and Vinda located their workshops in different places across the country.</p>
<p>Currently, the export volume of paper and paperboard only accounts for less than 5% of the total output. In order to protect environment as well as satisfy domestic demands, the Chinese government does not encourage the export of paper and paperboard. Therefore, governments at all levels rarely publish supportive policies for the papermaking industry.</p>
<p>Chinese papermaking enterprises lack their own forestry property and mainly import raw materials for papermaking. The short supply of raw materials greatly affects the development of the papermaking industry as it rapidly grows. Also, the government policies and other extrinsic factors impact the import of raw materials.</p>
<p>CRI predicates that, with the development of Chinese economy and the rising living standards, the demand for <a href="https://www.cri-report.com/china-household-paper-industry-overview-2017-2021/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="71" title="China Household Paper Industry Overview, 2017-2021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">household paper</a> is growing. <p>According to CRI, pork is a major variety of meat consumption in China so the pig industry plays a significant role in China’s animal husbandry. In 2017, the production volume of pork reached 63.4 million tons in China, accounting for 63.4% of the total production volume of meat.</p>
<p>For many years, the number of pigs in China has always been the highest in the world. Based on the data, the number of pigs on hand kept growing before 2012. However, the number has been on the decline since 2013 for rising costs and it decreased by 2.1% at the end of 2014 compared to the highest level in 2012. By the end of 2017, the number of pigs on hand reached 338 million, 8% lower than that in 2016. The number of pig slaughtered amounted to 688.1 million in 2017, with an increase of 0.5% over the previous year. From 2000 to 2014, the production volume of pork was on the increase in China, which exceeded 50 million tons in 2010 and then reached a new high of 56.71 million tons in 2014, with a proportion of 65.1% of the total. However, the production volume has been stuck in sluggish growth since 2015. It amounted to 53.4 million tons in 2017, increasing by 0.8% compared to 2016. In recent years, with the promotion of standardized large-scale breeding, the number of standardized large-scale farms has increased sharply.</p>
<p>According to CRI, pork is still the major meat consumption for Chinese residents. With the economic development and rising level of urbanization in China, the overall consumption of pork and the consumption per capita are both on the rise. As for the consumer groups, the household pork consumption of urban residents is higher than that of rural residents, and both have been relatively stable since 2009. Every year, urban residents consume over 20 kg of pork per capita while the rural residents consume about 15 kg of pork per capita.</p>
<p>The areas of pig raising and pork producing mainly include Asia, North America and Europe, such as China, EU, the U.S., Brazil and Canada. In addition, the major consumption is concentrated in China, Europe, North America, Japan, Russia, etc.</p>
<p>As the production volume of pork fails to meet the domestic demand in China, the overall import volume continues to increase. In 2017, the import volume of pork in China fell to 1.2168 million tons and decreased by 24.9% YOY. Meanwhile, the import value totaled about USD 2.22 billion, decreasing by 30.4% YOY. During 2014-2016, the import volume and value of pork both increased in China, while they declined in 2017. According to CRI, China has mainly imported pork from EU, the U.S. and Canada in recent years. Every year, China imports not only pork but also a great deal of pig offal for consumers&#8217; preference. In 2017, the total import volume of pork and pig offal reached 2.45 million tons. Of the total, the import volume from the U.S. accounted for 24%, which was 22% in 2016. Under the original import tariff policy, the imported pork and pig offal from the U.S. always have stable and obvious p<a href="https://www.cri-report.com/vietnams-rice-industry-2016-2030/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1966" title="Research Report on Vietnam&#039;s Rice Industry 2016-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a> advantages in the Chinese market. In terms of the level in Apr. 2018, the average p<a href="https://www.cri-report.com/vietnams-rice-industry-2016-2030/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1966" title="Research Report on Vietnam&#039;s Rice Industry 2016-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a> of imported pork and pig offal was 2.5-3.0 CNY/kg lower than that of domestic products. In the case of a 25% import tariff, the imported pork and pig offal from the U.S. will no longer maintain p<a href="https://www.cri-report.com/vietnams-rice-industry-2016-2030/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1966" title="Research Report on Vietnam&#039;s Rice Industry 2016-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a> advantages over the domestic products in China. If China imposes tariffs on pork and pig offal from the U.S., the gap will be filled up by pork products from Germany, Denmark, Spain, Canada, etc.</p>
<p>With the sustained economic development, the rising per capita income and the ongoing urbanization, the market demand for pork will continue to increase in China. However, hindered by rising costs of pig raising and stricter policies on environmental protection, the pig slaughtered and production volume of pork are not expected to increase rapidly from 2018 to 2012. It is estimated that the profits of pig raising will keep growing in recent years. At the same time, the import volume of pork will also continue to increase.</p>

Its production has kept growing in recent years. As the Chinese government imposes a 15% tariff on the export of electrolytic aluminum, the export volume is in a small quantity. However, that of aluminum products is large. In 2017, the export volume of aluminum products reached 4.24 million tons. Considering that some export enterprises may misreport product types, the actual number may be even larger. The exported aluminum products of China are faced with a great number of international trade disputes. The U.S, Canada, Australia have all initiated anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations on China-made aluminum products. On Mar. 8, 2018, U.S. president Donald J. Trump signed a joint statement on <a href="" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="640" title="Research Report on Vietnam Steel Industry 2021-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">steel</a> and aluminum at the White House, announcing that since Mar. 23, a 25% tariff would be imposed on imported <a href="" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="640" title="Research Report on Vietnam Steel Industry 2021-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">steel</a> and a 10% tariff on imported aluminum products. In 2017, the export value of aluminum and its products to the U.S. was about USD 3.7 billion, accounting for nearly 30% of the total exports. Accordingly, this move of the U.S. is expected to have a detrimental effect on China&#8217;s exports of aluminum products in 2018.<br />
CRI report shows that the production costs of electrolytic aluminum mainly include raw materials, energy and manpower. The most important two are aluminum oxide and electricity, which account for 60 to 70% of the aggregate costs. China holds less than 5% of bauxite reserves in the world, while its production capacity of electrolytic aluminum reaches more than 50% of the globe. Therefore, China needs to import a large amount of bauxite each year. In 2017, it imported 68.55 million tons, with an increase of 32.6% YOY. China&#8217;s largest exporter was Guinea in the year when it imported a total of 27.63 million tons of bauxite. The fluctuation of bauxite p<a href="https://www.cri-report.com/vietnams-rice-industry-2016-2030/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1966" title="Research Report on Vietnam&#039;s Rice Industry 2016-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a>s will seriously affect the production cost of electrolytic aluminum. Another cost source is electricity, taking up more than 30% of the total to produce electrolytic aluminum. In order to reduce costs, many electrolytic aluminum companies have built their own power plants, mainly fueled by coal. Consequently, environmental pollution follows.<br />
By the beginning of May 2018, the annual production capacity of electrolytic aluminum in China was approximately 47 million tons. In 2017, in order to control the new capacity, China Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the Ministry of Environmental Protection jointly launched a special campaign to rectify illegal activities in the electrolytic aluminum industry. All new illegal production capacity was shut down and the blind expansion was curbed, to reduce the risk of serious overcapacity. On Jan. 18, 2018, MIIT issued Notice on Capacity Displacement of Electrolytic Aluminum Enterprises through Merger, Acquisition and Reorganization, in which it set specific requirements in this regard. Subsequently, MIIT released an interpretation document for the Notice, which explains in detail the displacement of electrolytic aluminum and also states that it should be completed by the end of 2018.<br />
CRI concludes that the industrial concentration is high in China. Electrolytic aluminum enterprises that possess annual capacity of over 1 million tons include Aluminum Corporation of China Limited, China Hongqiao Group, Xinfa Group Co., Ltd. , SPIC Aluminum &amp; Power Investment Co., Ltd. , Xinjiang East Hope Non-ferrous Metal Co., Ltd. , Xinjiang East Hope Non-ferrous Metal Co., Ltd. , Gansu Dongxing Aluminum Co., Ltd. , Henan Shenhuo Group Co., Ltd. , Hunan Zengshi Aluminum Group, Yunnan Aluminum Limited Liability Company, Hangzhou Jinjiang Group Co., Ltd. and Sichuan Qiya Aluminum Group. By the end of 2017, the aggregate capacity of above enterprises accounted for over 70% in the country.<br />
CRI estimates that from 2018 to 2022, the development of the electrolytic aluminum industry will be enhanced considering that China&#8217;s economy will maintain an annual growth rate of above 6% and that the urbanization will keep rising.
