Rare Earth Elements (REEs) refer to 17 metallic elements in the periodic table, including 15 lanthanide elements and scandium and yttrium. Rare earth elements can usually be divided into light rare earths (Light REEs, La-Nd), medium rare earths (Medium REEs, Sm-Ho) and heavy rare earths (Heavy REEs, Er-Lu). Rare earths are mainly used in the fields of petroleum, chemical industry, metallurgy, textile, ceramic glass, permanent magnetic materials, etc. They are known as “industrial MSG”, “industrial vitamins” and “the mother of new materials” and are precious strategic metal resources.

The rare earth industry can be divided into three main parts: upstream, midstream and downstream. According to CRI analysis, the upstream of the rare earth industry includes geological exploration, mine construction and mineral processing. The output is concentrated ore enriched with rare earths, accounting for about 17% of the value of the entire industry.

The midstream is the smelting, separation and purification of rare earths, which accounts for about 27% of the value share due to high technical barriers and high energy consumption. The downstream includes processing high-purity rare earth oxides or metals into functional materials (such as permanent magnetic materials, phosphors, catalysts, alloys, polishing powders, etc.), and further manufacturing end products such as electric motors, high-performance ceramics, optical glass, petrochemical catalysts, polishing parts, etc. Among them, the value of functional materials accounts for more than 50% of the value of the entire industry chain.

So far, the global rare earth market demand has continued to grow, mainly benefiting from the demand for electric vehicle drive motors, permanent magnet materials for wind turbines and catalysts for electronic products. The demand for permanent magnet materials is the main driving force of the rare earth market. With the increase in the penetration rate of hybrid and pure electric vehicles and the expansion of global wind power installed capacity, the demand for neodymium iron boron magnets has grown rapidly.

In addition, the demand for rare earth alloys in the high-end manufacturing field is also growing steadily, especially in key application areas such as satellite communications. CRI predicts that with the rapid development of industries such as electric vehicles and electronics, the global demand for rare earths will continue to rise in the next few years. The demand for rare earths in some emerging markets, such as Vietnam, is rising.

Vietnam is one of the countries with the greatest potential for rare earth resources in the world. According to statistics, Vietnam’s rare earth reserves are about 3.5 million tons, ranking sixth in the world, accounting for about 3.9% of the world’s total rare earth reserves. According to Vietnamese statistics, Vietnam’s largest rare earth mine covers an area of more than 11 square kilometers, and rare earth oxide reserves exceed 5 million tons.

According to CRI analysis, Vietnam’s rare earth resource potential is large and needs to be further developed. In the future, with the rapid development of the new energy industry, the global rare earth market demand will become more vigorous, and Vietnam’s rare earth industry chain will have great development potential and space.

According to CRI analysis, although Vietnam currently has relatively rich rare earth reserves, its rare earth production is very low due to its backward domestic mining technology and smelting and separation technology. In recent years, the Vietnamese government has been actively promoting the development of Vietnam’s rare earth and other mineral resources. Its “Overall Plan for Mineral Resources Exploration, Development and Utilization 2021-2030 (Vision 2050)” proposes to build a green circular mining system comparable to the advanced level of East Asia by 2045, and has made special arrangements for the exploration, mining, deep processing and efficient utilization of Vietnam’s rare earth resources, which provides a large development space for the mining, refining and processing of Vietnam’s rare earth industry.

CRI predicts that with the rising global demand for key minerals, the improvement of Vietnam’s rare earth mining and smelting technology, and the improvement of relevant laws and regulations, Vietnam is expected to establish and increase considerable commercial production capacity.

CRI recommends that global mining-related companies should conduct timely research on the Vietnamese market and prepare for the layout of the Vietnamese rare earth market. Rare earth metals, also known as rare earth elements, are a general term for 17 elements in the IIIB group of the periodic table, including scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, etc. Rare earth metals have vital applications in many high-tech industries, especially in the fields of electronics, energy, aviation, military and environmental protection. Due to their key role in high-tech products and clean energy technologies, rare earth metals are becoming increasingly Exporting. The supply and environmental impact of rare earth resources have gradually become the focus of global attention.

Vietnam ranks second in the world in rare earth resource reserves. Vietnam’s rare earth resources are mainly concentrated in some provinces in the central and northern parts of the country, especially in Quang Nam and Ha Giang. According to CRI analysis, the rare earth deposits in Quang Nam are the largest and most Exportant rare earth resources in Vietnam, mainly light rare earth elements (such as lanthanum), which are particularly suitable for refining rare earth metals in catalysts and optical equipment. Ha Giang and the northern region are also rich in rare earth resources, mainly including rare earths, praseodymium, and konium, which are suitable for high-tech industries such as electronic products and new energy fields.

In recent years, Vietnam has started to mine rare earths on a large scale, but its rare earth production capacity is limited. Currently, Vietnam’s rare earth mining is in its early stages, and is mainly based on traditional open-pit mining. According to CRI analysis, Vietnam currently has some rare earth smelters and processing facilities, but the technical level and production capacity of these factories are relatively low, but they have great development potential.

Vietnam’s rare earth metals are mainly exported, especially to Asian markets such as China, South Korea, and Japan. According to CRI analysis, the Vietnamese government is still working hard to encourage the growth of domestic demand, especially in high-end industries and new energy industries. In addition, the Vietnamese government promotes the modernization of Vietnam’s rare earth resource mining and refining technology by attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and strengthening cooperation with international companies. In the future, as the global demand for rare earth resources continues to increase, Vietnam has the potential to become an Exportant global supplier of rare earths.

According to CRI data, Vietnam’s total rare earth metal exports reached US$160 million in 2023. Since 2024, international market demand has continued to grow. From January to October 2024, Vietnam’s rare earth metal exports have reached nearly US$137 million, and are expected to continue to grow in the next few years.

According to CRI analysis, countries in the Asia-Pacific region are becoming the main markets for Vietnam’s rare earth metal exports. Among them, Japan is the largest export destination for Vietnam’s rare earth metals, followed by Hong Kong, Thailand, China and other countries and regions. In addition, countries such as Singapore, Spain and South Korea are also becoming Exportant markets for Vietnam’s rare earth metal exports.

From 2021 to 2024, the main export destinations of Vietnam’s rare earth metals are Japan, Hong Kong, China and Thailand. According to CRI analysis, the main companies Exporting rare earth metals from Vietnam include INTEGRAL MATERIALS INVESTMENT LTD, MTN CO LTD, SHIN ETSU CHEMICAL CO LTD etc. The main exporters of Vietnamese rare earth metals include INTEGRAL MATERIALS INVESTMENT VI?T NAM COCO LTD, SHOWA DENKO RARE-EARTH CO LTD, SHIN-ETSU VIETNAM etc.

Overall, Vietnam has rich rare earth resources, but its refining and processing technology is relatively backward and its production capacity is limited. With the growth of the global market size of new energy, such as electric vehicles and wind power generation, the global demand for rare earth metals will continue to increase.

CRI predicts that in the next few years, Vietnam will further strengthen its connection with the international market and, through technological innovation and environmental protection measures, achieve sustainable development of Vietnam’s rare earth industry while ensuring the rational exploitation of resources, and become an Exportant rare earth supplier. CRI recommends that companies related to the global rare earth industry chain can conduct research on the Vietnamese rare earth market as soon as possible to prepare for future layout in Vietnam.
