China’s Building-integrated photovoltaics BIPV Market

Photovoltaic building is a new concept of applying solar power generation and is a perfect combination of solar photovoltaic system and modern building. It lays photovoltaic modules on the outer surface of building structure to provide electricity, integrating solar power generation system with roof, skylight, curtain wall and other buildings, building green and environmental protection housing.

In BIPV, BAPV is relatively mature. Currently, BIPV is in the initial stage. Under the guidance of “double carbon target”( that is, to achieve peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060), building energy efficiency and distributed PV policy, and continuous progress in BIPV standards, global BIPV and the market is expected to witness a rapid rise.

As of 2020, BIPV accounted for about 50% of the global distributed PV installed capacity, about 15% of the total PV installation. The combination of PV and building is gradually becoming an important part of the PV installation, which is dominated by the combination of PV building and BAPV.

In the world, the total installed capacity of BIPV in 2019 and 2020 amounted to 1.15GW and 2.3GW respectively, which is still in the initial stage before large-scale development, with huge space for future development.

According to CRI’s analysis, overall, the impact of COVID-19 on the global PV industry is relatively small.

In 2020, global newly installed capacity of PV reached 130GW, up 13% YOY; China’s newly installed capacity of PV was 48.2GW, up 60% YOY, ranking first in the world for 8 consecutive years, and the cumulative installed capacity reached 253GW, ranking first in the world for 6 consecutive years.

On October 24, 2021, China’s State Council issued the “Action Plan to Achieve Peak Carbon Dioxide Emissions by 2030” to accelerate green changes in production and lifestyle, promote economic and social development based on the efficient use of resources and green low-carbon development, and ensure that the goal of peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 is achieved on schedule.

The program calls for vigorous development of new energy, accelerating the development of intelligent photovoltaic industry, and promoting the diversified layout of photovoltaic power generation. It is planned that by 2030, the total installed capacity of wind and solar power generation in China should reach more than 1.2 billion kilowatts.

At the same time, the optimization of building energy structure should be accelerated. It is planned that by 2025, the replacement rate of urban buildings renewable energy should reach 8%, the photovoltaic coverage rate of new public institutions buildings and new plant roofs should reach 50%.

According to CRI’s analysis, in 2020, the rapid growth of China’s domestic photovoltaic power generation directly led to the great development of China’s photovoltaic industry chain links. In 2020, China’s polysilicon production was 392,000 tons, up 14.6% YOY; silicon wafer production 161.3GW, up 19.7%; cell production 134.8GW, up 22.2% YOY; module production 124.6 GW, up 26.4% YOY.

China’s production scale of each link in PV industry chain accounted for more than 50% of the world and continues to maintain the world’s first. The great development of China’s photovoltaic industry has also promoted the technological progress of the industry, leading to the further reduction in the production cost of photovoltaic products and electricity.

In recent years, China’s construction area of real estate development enterprises housing continues to increase. In 2020, housing construction area increased to 9.26759 billion square meters.

The Ministry of Housing and Construction indicated that in 2020, there were 630 million square meters of new assembled buildings in China, accounting for about 20% of the total new construction area, or about 3.15 billion square meters of new construction area in 2020. Moreover, China’s existing building area excels 40 billion square meters. All these indicates that there exists a huge potential for the BIPV market.

CRI expects that in 2022-2030, global and China’s PV market demand will continue to rise, and for investors, there are many investment opportunities in the BIPV industry chain.

Vietnam’s Photovoltaic Market

As of the end of 2020, Vietnam has accumulated more than 16GW of photovoltaic installed capacity, ranking third in the world’s newly installed capacity in 2020, second only to China and the United States. Among them, the new rooftop photovoltaic installations in 2020 exceeded 9GW, involving about 100,000 households, and the onshore and offshore photovoltaic installations exceeded 1GW.

Vietnam became the world’s third largest photovoltaic market in 2020.

It is estimated that by 2025, Vietnam’s national electricity demand will reach 90,000 megawatts. It is estimated that from 2022 to 2030, Vietnam’s GDP will grow at an annual rate of 6.5%-7.5%, the annual growth rate of electricity demand will reach 7%, and the demand will reach 130,000 megawatts by 2030. According to CRI’s analysis, Vietnam is a very attractive market for foreign investors.

Vietnam is one of the Southeast Asian countries with the richest solar energy, with 2000-2500 hours of sunshine per year and 5kWh per square meter per day. In the ASEAN, according to the projects being developed and reserved by photovoltaic developers, Vietnam is the market with the most completed projects and reserved projects.

Scatec Solar and EVN (Electricity of Vietnam) each have a project plan of more than 500MW. Trungnam Group and Xuan Thien Group each completed photovoltaic power plants of more than 1GW.

In February 2021, Vietnam announced Vietnam’s eighth power plan draft (PDP VIII), which raised the renewable energy development target by nearly 70% to 45 GW by 2030, including 20 GW for photovoltaics.

Vietnam’s photovoltaic industry also has photovoltaic curtailment risks. Vietnam is a long and narrow land with uneven distribution of sunlight resources. Under the condition of a unified FIT electricity price across the country, photovoltaic projects are concentrated in southern Vietnam. In addition, the power grid in Vietnam is weak, and the photovoltaic projects are at risk of power curtailment.

According to CRI’s analysis, although Vietnam has become one of the fastest-growing markets for electricity in renewable energy in Asia, the lagging development of its power system and the surge in installed renewable energy power capacity pose a huge challenge to the stability of the power grid in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, photovoltaic power generation has accounted for a quarter of the total power generation of the power system. This explosive growth has affected the stability of Vietnam’s power distribution system.

According to CRI’s analysis, in 2020, Vietnam imported 14.6GW of photovoltaic modules. In November, the monthly import volume reached to the peak of 3.9GW. Currently, Vietnam’s photovoltaic module market is mainly occupied by foreign-funded enterprises.

Among them, Chinese companies Jinko, JA Solar, LONGI, Trina, and a Canadian company, Canadian Solar Inc. rank among the top 5 in the total imported photovoltaic modules in Vietnam.

In 2020, in Vietnam’s PV module shipments, monocrystalline PV modules accounted for 89%, 72-cell solar panel accounted for 63%, and the mainstream power of module was 440-450W. The demand for photovoltaic modules in Vietnam is also transforming to monocrystalline and large silicon wafers.

From January to July 2021, the total amount of components imported by Vietnam from China was less than 1,000 MW, which is less than a quarter of the volume in November 2020. This is due to the large number of rooftop photovoltaic installations in Vietnam in 2020, which was stimulated by the national subsidy policy.

In April 2021, Vietnam reduced the amount of subsidies, causing the import volume of photovoltaic modules in Vietnam to plummet. Compared with the continued decline in module shipments, China’s exports of solar cells and silicon wafers to Vietnam in July 2021 rebounded, reaching USD19 million and USD80 million respectively, an increase of 53% and 182% compared with June.

On the whole, Vietnam’s short-term demand for imported photovoltaic modules has decreased, but the demand for solar cells and silicon wafers is stable.

Local companies in Vietnam’s photovoltaic industry are also expanding rapidly. SolarBK is the leading manufacturer of solar panels in Vietnam. For example, at the end of 2017, IREX, a member of SolarBK, completed the first phase of a solar panel and solar cell factory with a capacity of 500MW in the southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

IREX’s factory was established in 2012 and has a modern production line that can produce photovoltaic cells of 300MW per year. IREX said that 40% of locally manufactured photovoltaic modules have been exported to the European and North American markets since 2018.

According to CRI’s forecast, as one of the hottest photovoltaic markets in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has the natural advantage of developing photovoltaic energy, and with the economic development, the demand for electricity in Vietnam is growing at a high pace. Therefore, the market will attract a lot of investment during 2022-2030.

Description

The photovoltaic industry develops rapidly in China in recent years. China became the world’s largest producer of photovoltaic products in 2007 with the export value of USD 2,838 million. In 2014, the total import and export value of Chinese solar photovoltaic products was USD 18.28 billion, increasing by 15.09% YOY. Among that, the export value was USD 14.41 billion, increasing by 17.27% YOY; the import value was USD 3.87 billion, up by 7.62% YOY.

Judged from the export structure and the market, Chinese export of photovoltaic products still has the following problems: it relies too much on processing trade and has not formed an autonomous R&D system; the structure of export market is not stable; the risk of trade friction exists in emerging markets at any time.

After nearly 10 years of rapid development, China photovoltaic industry entered into a difficult period as overseas photovoltaic market shrank in 2011. Developing domestic markets became the consensus of the government and enterprises. China is rich in solar energy resource with the theoretical reserves equal to 1.7 trillion tons of standard coal every year. The potential of the exploitation of solar energy resource is enormous. China is situated in the northern hemisphere with the distance between the north and the south and that between the east and the west are both over 5,000 km. There is abundant solar energy resource in the vast land of China. In most places, the annual average daily radiation is more than 4 kWh/m2 and the annual sunshine duration is over 2,000 h, so there exists a huge development potential.

In recent years, as China’s demand for energy increases, the environment protection pressure grows. After the great setback against it caused by trade protection of western countries in 2012, China photovoltaic industry is gradually returning to a sensible state, reshaping supply and demand relationship and approaching the balance of market pattern. With the deepening of the idea of environment protection and the fluctuation of the price of fossil fuels, Chinese government has formulated a series of policies to support the downstream application of photovoltaic industry since 2013. New photovoltaic installed capacity reached 11.3 GW in 2013, increasing by 126% than that in 2012 and ranking the first in the world.

In 2014, the total photovoltaic power generation grid capacity was 28.05 MW, increasing by 60% YOY, including 23.38 MW in photovoltaic power stations and 4.67 MW of distributed photovoltaic power. The annual photovoltaic power generating capacity is about 25 billion kilowatt-hours, increasing by 200% YOY.

In 2014, new grid photovoltaic power generation capacity was 10.60 MW, occupying about a quarter of that of the whole world and a third of the output of Chinese photovoltaic cell modules, realizing the target of an annual increase of 10 MW put forward in Suggestions on Promoting the Healthy Development of Photovoltaic Industry, with 8.55 MW in photovoltaic power stations and 2.05 MW of distributed photovoltaic power.

Chinese photovoltaic battery manufacturers continued to keep strong international competitiveness in 2014. Among the famous enterprises which were the top ten in terms of global output, China occupied six places while top 4 were all Chinese enterprises. In terms of the development of upstream photovoltaic industry, the domestic output of polysilicon was about 130,000 tons in 2014, increasing by 50% YOY, while the import volume was about 90,000 tons. The total output of photovoltaic cell modules was over 33 million kilowatts, increasing by 17% YOY. The proportion of export was about 68%. Most enterprises improved their capacity utilization. The average capacity utilization of top 10 enterprises was over 87%.

To some extent, China photovoltaic industry still faces the situation where raw materials and market rely on overseas markets. As photovoltaic products are export-focused, it is very easy to cause trade friction. In the meantime, as the overall profit level of China photovoltaic industry is low, investment in R&D is insufficient. Therefore, most photovoltaic enterprises have not yet developed a mature R&D system and the technical level of products is universally low.

The optical components, which are also known as optical concentrators, are manufactured to harvest sunlight from a broad area of incidence and concentrate it directly onto a small area covered by the photovoltaic (PV) cells. This phenomenon vitalizes the intensity of the incident sunlight reaching the PV cells, which in turn, increase the amount of the power the cells can generate.
In 2015, a new world record was set for global investment in renewable energy with a total investment of USD 285.9 billion. (UN Environmental Programme). The current and future planned investment in renewable energy is expected to lead the solar industry. Solar electricity in most of the developed economies is competitive with conventional energy sources. This has created a lucrative market for solar industry across the world. The global initiative to promote renewable energy and reduce harmful emission is likely to drive the global concentrated photovoltaic market.
In 2015, Soitec demonstrated a CPV module efficiency of 38.9 % at Concentrator Standard Test Conditions (CSTC), and efficiencies of commercially available CPV modules exceed 30%. The continuous effort from renowned research institutes such as National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and many others to improve the efficiency of the CPV, thus reducing the overall cost associated with the system. CPV electricity generation is dependent on DNI as it does not absorb any diffuse radiation from the sun. This has made CPV technology more feasible in the high Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) regions across the globe. A huge number of the CPV systems are likely to be deployed in these sunlight-rich regions in the coming years.
