In 2021, China exported 897,400 sets of automotive sunroofs (including electric sunroofs and manual sunroofs, the same below), up 36.9% year-on-year, with an export value of US$183 million, up 40.9% year-on-year. In the first three quarters of 2022, China exported 671,000 sets of automotive sunroofs, up 3.0% year-on-year, with an export value of US$157 million, up 14.8% year-on-year.

China’s exports of automotive sunroofs are mainly electric sunroofs and manual sunroofs. CRI analysis, electric sunroofs are China’s main export type. In the first three quarters of 2018-2022, the export volume of electric sunroofs accounted for about 90% of the total exports of automotive sunroofs, and the export value was more than 95% of the total exports of automotive sunroofs.

In the first three quarters of 2018-2022, the average price of China’s automotive sunroof exports continued to grow. The average price of China’s automotive sunroof exports increased slightly in 2018-2021, generally remaining in the price range of US$190-210 per set. In the first three quarters of 2022, the average price of China’s automotive sunroof exports was US$233.8 per set, up 11.5% year-on-year.

CRI analysis, China’s automotive sunroof export average price growth is mainly driven by the growth of the average export price of electric sunroof. In the first three quarters of 2018-2022, the export price of electric sunroof increased from US$207.3 per set to US$251.6 per set. The export price of manual sunroofs is more volatile, rising and falling. In the first three quarters of 2022, China’s average export price of manual sunroofs was US$77.0 per set, down 5.2% year-on-year.

In 2021, China exported automotive sunroofs to 83 countries and regions, and CRI analyzed that India, the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea were the main export destinations for Chinese automotive sunroofs by export volume. In terms of the export destination of electric sunroofs, these five countries are also the major export destinations of China’s electric sunroofs by export volume. CRI analysis shows that India is the largest exporter of electric sunroofs to China. In 2021, China exported 290.0 thousand sets of electric sunroofs to India, accounting for 36.4% of the total export volume of electric sunroofs, and the export value of US$68.4 million, accounting for 38.8% of the total export value of electric sunroofs.

CRI analysis, Australia, the Russian Federation, Germany, Italy and France are the main export destination of Chinese manual sunroofs, among which, Australia is the largest export volume of Chinese manual sunroofs. In 2021, China exported 28,300 sets of manual sunroofs to Australia, accounting for 33.8% of the total export volume of manual sunroofs, and the export value of US$3.4 million, accounting for 49.6% of the total export value of manual sunroofs.

CRI expects that China’s automotive sunroof exports are expected to continue to rise from 2023-2032. On the one hand, auto sunroofs produced by local auto parts manufacturers in China will continue to be exported. On the other hand, the factories set up by Chinese auto parts companies in Vietnam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries will also export a large number of auto parts, including sunroofs, to various parts of the world.

As an important reference factor in car consumption, the sunroof is a practical auto accessory to facilitate ventilation and improve interior lighting degree. Sunroof is born with vehicles, which once was the symbol of limousine and luxurious auto configuration. Nowadays, many low-price cars are equipped with sunroofs due to its popularization.

The automobile industry developed rapidly after China joined WTO, which promoted the development of automobile accessory industry. In 2015, the output volume of automobiles was 24,503,300 in China, increasing by 3.25% YOY. Meanwhile, the sales volume reached 24,597,600 with an increase of 4.68% YOY. The growth rate of output volume and sales volume declined by 4.05% and 1.92% compared to 2014 respectively. The output volume and sales volume of passenger vehicles respectively reached 21,079,400 and 21,146,300 with an increase of 5.78% and 7.30% respectively. From 2009 on, China continuously became the world’s largest automobile producer and sales market.

The development of automobile market, especially the rapid growth of passenger vehicle market, promotes the development of sunroof market in China. The output volume of automobiles in China was merely 2.07 million in 2000. Most vehicles were not equipped with sunroofs when leaving factory, whilst merely a small quantity of automobile refit manufactories offered sunroof installation services. Based on CRI, one third of automobiles were equipped with sunroofs when leaving factory in China up to the end of August, 2016. More than half of the automobiles whose prices exceed CNY 100,000 are equipped with sunroofs. In addition, many sunroofs are installed through automobile refit factories. Although a small amount of high-end sunroofs are imported, China is self-sufficient in most varieties of sunroofs with a large number of exports. China sunroof market is occupied by foreign-funded sunroof giants such as Webasto which continually increase their production capacity. For instance, Webasto built over 10 production bases in China with the sales revenue of over CNY 5 billion.

A larger amount of domestic enterprises in China enters the sunroof industry. However, they fail to form a large scale of production capacity due to technical and financial obstacles. Most domestic enterprises in China produce limited types of sunroofs, of which the quality and after-sales quality are difficult to guarantee. Therefore, their target market mainly focuses on the low-end whole vehicle market and automobile refit market. Some domestic auto parts manufacturers enhance their production capacity and market share by purchasing foreign-funded sunroof manufacturers. In 2011, Beijing Hainachuan Automotive Parts Co., Ltd. of BAIC Motor purchased 100% stock equity of Inalfa. As the world’s second sunroof supplier, Inalfa provides products to entire vehicle manufacturers such as BMW, Benz, Land Rover, Volvo. After the acquisition of Inalfa, the self-owned brand passenger vehicles of Beijing Hyundai, Beijing Benz and BAIC Motor purchased the products of Inalfa.

According to the analysis of CRI, the output volume and sales volume of automobiles in China are predicted to increase year by year with the rapid development of Chinese economy. Meanwhile, the progressive upgradation in the product structure of automobiles, especially passenger vehicles, provides great opportunities in the development of sunroof industry. Expanding investment of enterprises such as Webasto in China proves greatly the bright prospect of the sunroof industry. The entire vehicle market and after-sales market in China offer numerous opportunities to the global sunroof manufacturers.
