Rare Earth Elements (REEs) is a collective term referring to a group of 17 elements: the 15 lanthanides from the periodic table, plus scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y).

Rare earth elements are typically classified into light and heavy rare earths. Light rare earth elements primarily include lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium. The resources are relatively abundant and are mainly used in permanent magnet materials, catalysts and glass ceramics.

Heavy rare earth elements mainly include dysprosium, terbium, yttrium, holmium, etc., which are even scarcer resources and mainly used in high-performance magnetic materials, military equipment, and high-end electronic equipment.

Established in 1967, ASEAN currently comprises 11 member states: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Laos, and Myanmar. With its large population, growing middle-class consumer market, low manufacturing costs, improving regional integration mechanisms, and robust international trade network, ASEAN has become one of the world’s fastest-growing and most attractive emerging economic regions for investment.

Vietnam is one of the ASEAN countries with the greatest rare-earth resource potential, followed closely by Malaysia. According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Vietnam’s rare-earth element reserves are estimated at approximately 3.5 billion tons, while Malaysia’s reserves stand at around 710 million tons.

According to CRI analysis, some countries in the region have large-scale rare earth reserves, such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, and Malaysia. However, the development of a complete rare earth industry chain has been hindered by factors including mining infrastructure, environmental protection policies, processing technologies, and the investment climate.

CRI recommends that global mineral miner, rare earth element smelter, mineral resource investor, private equity (PE) funds and venture capital (VC) firms conduct timely market research on the ASEAN region to prepare for their strategic entry into the ASEAN rare earth element market.
