Thailand Steel Industry

Thailand is the second largest economy in ASEAN after Indonesia, with a total land area of 513,120 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, Thailand has a population of approximately 70 million.

Thailand has an annual steel production capacity of about 10 million tons, mainly using the electric arc furnace (EAF) production process. The major steel companies in Thailand are GSteel Steel, GJSteel Steel, and Tata Steel Thailand. In December 2021, Nippon Steel announced that it had paid US$419 million to acquire a 49.99% stake in GSteel Steel and a 40.45% stake in GJSteel Steel. As of now, no new capacity expansion projects have been announced by Thai officials.

Considering efficiency and cost issues, the equipment utilization rate of Thai steel companies is not very high. Thailand’s domestic demand for flat steel is mainly met through imports (70%-75% of total imports). Japan, China and South Korea are Thailand’s top three sources of imports, while the US, Indonesia and Vietnam are its top three export destinations.

Thailand is not very rich in raw material resources; its iron ore production is very small and it relies mainly on imports. Phu Ang Iron Ore Mine located in Lai Phu, Thailand is the largest iron ore mine in Thailand, with total reserves estimated at 10.9 million tons and an iron content of 65% to 67%. Another mine in Thailand is the Phu Hia iron ore mine. Both of these iron ore mines are located in northeastern Thailand.

Thai steelmakers are worried about the influx of cheap steel products from Russia into the Thai and ASEAN markets after Russia was sanctioned over the Russia-Ukraine war. Russia is looking for new buyers as its steel exports are banned from the European market. Meanwhile, Chinese steelmakers are also seeking to expand exports as steel consumption in China has fallen. If cheap imported steel products are dumped into the Thai market, it is expected to deal a devastating blow to Thailand’s domestic steel manufacturing industry.

In recent years, Thailand’s steel consumption has been more than 60% dependent on imported steel. In 2018, this figure was 62.3%, rising to nearly 69% by 2023.

For example, in 2023, Thailand’s apparent consumption of finished steel was about 16.33 million tons, and in that year, Thailand’s production volume of finished steel was only 6.6 million tons, and import volume of finished steel was as high as 11.21 million tons.

As a result, some local Thai steel manufacturers have asked the Thai government to restrict steel imports. For more than a decade, the Thai government has issued a series of anti-dumping measures against imported steel products, but they have been largely ineffective. The main reason for Thailand’s rising steel imports is the high cost of Thai-produced steel, as well as an inadequate product range. For downstream companies, it is more cost-effective to purchase imported products. Thai steel imports will continue to rise in the future if Thai steel companies do not seek to reduce production costs and develop mid-range and high-end products.

In 2023, Thailand’s consumption of finishes steel declined 0.4% year-on-year to 16.33 million tons from 16.39 million tons in 2022. The CAGR of consumption of finished steel in Thailand is -3.3% over the period 2018-2023.

As the cost of crude steel and steel production in Thailand is higher than in some countries in Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, and also higher than in China, India and Japan in Asia, the growth of Thailand’s domestic steel output volume is expected to be limited in the next few years. In case of low steel prices in the international market, there is a possibility of a decline in Thailand’s domestic steel production.

CRI predicts that Thailand’s steel production and consumption will both increase in 2024-2033. The main reason is that Thailand is the country with the strongest comprehensive manufacturing strength in Southeast Asia. On the one hand, the continued growth of Thailand’s economy will promote the increase in Thailand’s domestic steel consumption. At the same time, with the economic growth of other Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand’s steel exports to these countries are expected to increase.

Factors such as the Sino-US trade war will reduce China’s steel exports, which will be beneficial to the development of Thailand’s local steel industry to a certain extent.

Thailand Automobile Tire Industry

Thailand, located in Southeast Asia, covers an area of over 500,000 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, Thailand has a population of approximately 70 million people. Manufacturing is a vital component of Thailand’s economy, with the total output of the manufacturing sector reaching US$ 133.87 billion in 2022, accounting for 27% of that year’s GDP. According to CRI, Thailand is the strongest manufacturing country among the ASEAN-10, particularly noted for its automotive industry chain, which includes automobile tire manufacturing, whole vehicle manufacturing, and electronics manufacturing, holding a significant position in Southeast Asia.

Thailand is a major global producer and exporter of rubber, with a total natural rubber production of 4.707 million tons in 2023, accounting for one-third of the world’s production, thus giving the Thai automobile tire industry a raw material advantage. As Thailand’s economy has developed, the number of vehicles in the country has also steadily increased. According to Thai government statistics, in 2022, Thailand had 19 million vehicles, with a vehicle ownership rate of 271 per thousand people. In Bangkok alone, the annual increase in passenger vehicle ownership exceeds 250,000 units. The development of Thailand’s automotive industry has spurred the growth of its automobile tire industry.

Thailand was the world’s second-largest tire exporter in 2022, accounting for 7.1% of the global market, with a slight decrease in export volume in 2023 but still maintaining a leading position. In 2022, the export value of automobile tires reached US$ 2.89 billion. From 2021 to 2022, the fastest-growing export markets for Thai automobile tires were Malaysia, Vietnam, and South Korea.

In Thailand’s automotive market, passenger cars, including light commercial vehicles like pickup trucks, hold a significant market share. Since 2022, the sales of electric vehicles have seen exponential growth, breaking through the 50,000-unit mark in 2023. CRI predicts that the future electric vehicle market will experience a minor explosion, which will also affect the development pattern of Thailand’s automobile tire industry. According to CRI, in 2023, Thai automobile tire production was approximately 58 million units, with passenger car tires accounting for about 90% of the total automobile tire production.

The Thai tire market is highly competitive. Major players include Michelin, Dunlop, Yokohama Tire, and Llit Co., Ltd. According to CRI, the Thai automobile tire market not only features local enterprises but also multinational tire giants. Chinese tire brands such as Linglong Tire and Chengshan Tire have also established a significant presence in Thailand by setting up factories. Due to its advantageous geographic location, favorable labor conditions, and government incentives, an increasing number of Chinese tire companies are choosing to set up factories in Thailand. For example, Xinyuan Rubber (Thailand) Company is a state-owned multinational group involved in natural rubber processing and sales; in 2022, the Haomai Group set up its second tire mold factory in Thailand.

CRI forecasts that from 2024 to 2033, Thai tire production will continue to rise, with automobile tire production projected to reach 96.31 million units by 2033, achieving an annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2%. In the coming years, the growth of Thailand’s automobile tire industry will be driven by domestic market demand as well as the continually increasing volume of tire exports.

Thailand Corrugated Packaging Industry

Thailand, situated in Southeast Asia, occupies a central position on the Indochina Peninsula. It borders the Gulf of Siam to the south and the Andaman Sea to the west. As of the end of 2023, Thailand’s population has surpassed 70 million. Manufacturing plays a crucial role in the Thai economy, contributing 30% to the GDP and surpassing other major sectors like services and trade. The growth of Thailand’s manufacturing industry has been a key driver for the development of its corrugated paper products industry.

The packaging industry is one of Thailand’s fastest-growing sectors. Propelled by the expansion of e-commerce and the transportation industries, the carton and packaging box industry has shown a consistent upward trend. According to CRI analysis, there are 1,190 carton and packaging box manufacturing companies in Thailand, representing 0.15% of all businesses. In 2023, the market size of Thailand’s corrugated packaging reached approximately US$ 1.231 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 2.9%.

Historically, Thailand’s corrugated packaging industry has predominantly served the manufacturing sector, playing a vital role in the upstream and downstream supply chains. This industry is essential for the transportation and sale of various manufactured goods. Thailand has long been a leader in manufacturing within Southeast Asia, although its growth has decelerated since 2022. Major sectors of Thailand’s manufacturing industry include automobile assembly, electronics, plastics, textiles, food processing, toys, building materials, and petrochemicals, with annual manufacturing exports exceeding US$ 300 billion.

Thailand’s logistics industry has also seen robust growth in recent years, particularly with the rise of e-commerce, which has significantly boosted the express delivery sector and, in turn, the corrugated paper products industry. Over the past decade, the logistics sector’s contribution to Thailand’s GDP has steadily increased.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, Thai consumers have increasingly turned to online shopping. In 2022, food, personal care, and electronic products dominated Thailand’s e-commerce market share. According to CRI analysis, this surge in e-commerce activity has also fueled the growth of the packaging industry. Thailand ranks as the second-largest e-commerce market in Southeast Asia, trailing only behind Indonesia. It hosts over 40 million consumers, with the Thai e-commerce GMV in 2023 expected to grow by more than 10%.

The Thai corrugated paper market is highly fragmented. According to CRI analysis, among the notable local manufacturers are Thai Containers Group (SCG Packaging), Sarnti Packaging Co. Ltd, and Balance Packing Co. Ltd. Additionally, international players like ASA Group Company Limited and Continental Packaging (Thailand) Co. Ltd have significant presence through foreign investments or joint ventures.

With continued economic development, particularly in the manufacturing and e-commerce sectors, the Thai corrugated paper products industry is poised for further growth. According to CRI predictions, the market size of Thailand’s corrugated packaging industry is expected to reach US$ 2.68 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1% from 2024 to 2033.

Thailand Cement market currently, in 2023, has witnessed an HHI of 9071, Which has decreased substantially as compared to the HHI of 9670 in 2017. The market is moving towards Highly concentrated. Herfindahl index measures the competitiveness of exporting countries. The range lies from 0 to 10000, where a lower index number represents a larger number of players or exporting countries in the market while a large index number means fewer numbers of players or countries exporting in the market. Thailand’s cement industry is characterized by a diverse range of manufacturers, including both domestic players and multinational corporations. Major companies such as Siam Cement Group (SCG), Siam City Cement (SCCC), and TPI Polene dominate the market, alongside several smaller players.

One of the key drivers of Thailand’s cement industry is the booming construction sector, fueled by rapid urbanization, industrialization, and government infrastructure projects. The country’s expanding population, coupled with increasing investments in residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects, has created a sustained demand for cement.

Thailand’s cement industry is known for its adherence to international quality standards and adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies. Many cement plants in the country are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring high efficiency, productivity, and environmental sustainability.

Moreover, Thailand’s cement industry has been proactive in implementing sustainable practices, including alternative fuel usage, waste heat recovery, and carbon emissions reduction initiatives. This commitment to sustainability aligns with global trends towards greener and more environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.

In recent years, Thailand’s cement industry has also focused on expanding its presence in international markets, leveraging its competitive advantages in terms of cost-efficiency, product quality, and logistics infrastructure. Export opportunities to neighboring countries in Southeast Asia and beyond have further fueled the growth of the industry.

In 2023, Thailand’s cement production will be about 35.42 million tons, down from 2022. CRI expects Thailand cement production to reach about 37.01 million tons in 2024. In 2033 Thailand cement production will reach 52.22 million tons, a CAGR of about 3.9% from 2024 to 2033. Drivers of growth in the Thai cement industry in the coming years include rising demand for cement in the Thai domestic market and rising exports of Thai cement.

However, like any other industry, Thailand’s cement sector also faces challenges, including fluctuating raw material costs, regulatory compliance, and competition from imports. Nevertheless, with its strong fundamentals, technological advancements, and strategic vision, the Thai cement industry continues to thrive, playing a crucial role in driving the country’s economic progress and infrastructure development.

Thailand Fertilizer Industry

Agriculture and plantation play a very important role in Thailand’s economic development. In the past 20 years, the proportion of Thailand’s agricultural economy in GDP has been roughly around 8%-10%, and the total annual output value has exceeded 1.5 trillion baht (US$ 40 billion). Thailand’s fertilizer industry has limited production capacity and requires a large amount of imported fertilizers every year. According to CRI analysis, Thailand is a country with an obvious fertilizer trade deficit. Thailand’s annual fertilizer import volume exceeds 4 million tons, but its export volume is only about 500,000 tons. Saudi Arabia, China, Russia, Canada and Malaysia are the top five import sources of fertilizers in Thailand in 2022.

Although the size of Thailand’s agricultural land has not changed significantly in recent years, Thailand’s agricultural productivity is growing rapidly, and this demand has led to an increase in the adoption of various agricultural products and technologies, promoting the development of Thailand’s fertilizer industry.

According to World Bank data, Thailand’s cultivated land area in 2021 was approximately 17.15 million hectares, accounting for 32.9% of the total land area. Among them, most of the farms are concentrated in the northeastern region of Thailand. The region suffers from poor soil quality, seasonality, variable rainfall, and scarcity of surface water. According to CRI analysis, fertilization is crucial to improving agricultural productivity in Thailand. At the policy level, the Thai government supports farmers by providing agricultural input subsidies. In 2019, the government announced new incentives for Thai farmers in the form of cheap fertilizers. This will promote the application of chemical fertilizers in Thailand. In addition, as the price of fertilizers in Thailand has continued to rise since the beginning of 2022, the Thai government has introduced policies to limit fertilizer prices to maintain the stability of the domestic agricultural economy.

Rice crops dominate Thailand’s crops, accounting for 41%, followed by rubber 28%; palm 12%; sugar cane 7%; feed corn 7% and pineapple 5%. These major crops in Thailand are generally fertilized with nitrogen fertilizers. , and most soil in Thailand is deficient in nitrogen. Therefore, nitrogen fertilizer is the most commonly used chemical fertilizer in Thailand, especially urea.
In 2020-2022, COVID -19 had a direct negative impact on the value chain of Thailand Fertilizer market . The main raw materials for the production of fertilizers include ammonium, sulfuric acid, phosphorus and potassium. Logistics obstruction has limited the supply of raw materials, and fertilizer prices have also affected the domestic fertilizer industry during the epidemic. The rise in fertilizer prices has a huge impact on a high-deficit country like Thailand, which basically relies on imports. According to CRI analysis, Thailand’s fertilizer industry has gradually recovered since 2023.

The concentration of chemical fertilizers in Thailand is moderate, and the participants mainly include companies such as Yara (Thailand) Company Limited, Haifa, Chai Thai Co.
CRI predicts that with the development of Thailand’s agriculture and planting industry, Thailand’s fertilizer imports will gradually increase in the next few years. CRI estimates that Thailand fertilizer imports will be approximately 5.92 million tons in 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of approximately 3.2% from 2024 to 2033.

Thailand Furniture Industry

Furniture refers to movable objects designed to facilitate various human activities, such as sitting, reclining, or storing items. Common examples of furniture include chairs, tables, beds, desks, and cabinets, each of which serves both functional and aesthetic purposes to enhance the practicality and visual appeal of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Furniture is made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, plastic, and textiles. Traditionally, furniture was handmade, but the rise of industrialization led to the mass production of standardized items. Furniture can also be categorized based on its intended use. Office furniture is specifically designed for workspaces, outdoor furniture is designed to withstand weather conditions, and residential furniture is focused on providing comfort and enhancing style. The design and arrangement of furniture play a key role in shaping the functionality and ambience of a space. Currently, furniture in Thailand is available in a variety of styles and designs, ranging from classic and ornate to modern and minimalist, to meet the diverse needs of individuals.

Thailand is in the midst of a transformation from a predominantly rural country to an increasingly urban one. Over the past decade, the country’s urbanization rate has shifted from 46.19 percent in 2013 to 53.64 percent in 2023, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.51 percent. According to CRI, this means that more than half of the population currently lives in cities and urban areas. While Thailand’s urbanization rates are still low compared to other developed nations, which can reach levels of 80-90 percent, this transformation in Thailand is still significant, especially as most of this growth is occurring and is expected to occur in the Krung Thep area, better known as Bangkok, the capital and largest city in Thailand. Krung Thep is now home to more than 11.2 million people and the number of tourists and overnight visitors to this city is also on the rise. These dynamics boost the demand for furniture and stimulate the development of the Thai furniture industry.

However, the Thai furniture industry still faces several challenges in today’s competitive landscape. Intense competition from neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Malaysia exert price pressure, and fluctuating raw material costs, especially for wood, may hinder the growth of the furniture market in Thailand.

What’s more, one area that will contribute to the furniture market’s long-term growth is the millennial demographic. As millions of millennials prepare to buy their first homes in the next few years, there is an opportunity for furniture retailers to capture market share by paying close attention to their buying behaviors and preferences. Hereby, CRI predicts a modest growth trajectory for the furniture industry in Thailand, the furniture market size in Thailand is expected to reach US$ 2.41 billion in 2033 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.1% from 2024 to 2033.

As one of the fastest-growing furniture manufacturers and most popular furniture exporters in Asia-Pacific region, furniture market of Thailand is highly segmented and competitive. In 2023, the export value of furniture in Thailand reached US$ 1.38 billion. According to CRI, the export value of furniture in Thailand is projected to increase with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2%, reaching more than US$2 billion by 2033.

Thailand Fuel Motorcycle Industry

Thailand fuel motorcycle market ranks among the top six in the world in terms of annual sales volume. It is currently a mature market, but there is still room for growth.

Thailand is the world’s fifth largest motorcycle manufacturing base after China (23 million vehicles), India (20 million vehicles), Indonesia (8 million vehicles) and Vietnam (3 million vehicles). Thailand started its first motorcycle manufacturing under the CKD system in 1967. In the 10 years before 1990, Thailand promoted investment in four-stroke engine motorcycles to replace two-stroke engine motorcycles to reduce emission problems, increasing production to 1.75 million units per year.

With the development of the country, motorcycles have become the preferred means of transportation for personal travel. After 1990, with the introduction of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), industrial protection measures were lifted and the Thai motorcycle industry began to export and develop in line with global demand, learning new technologies and adopting the most advanced safety rules and emissions. In Thailand, 87% of households own motorcycles, the highest proportion in Asia.

The Thai fuel motorcycle market is mainly occupied by six brands, namely Honda, Yamaha, Vespa, GP Motor, Suzuki and Kawasaki. According to CRI, among them, Honda’s sales market share has been above 70% for many years, and it has ranked first in the Thai market for many years. Yamaha’s sales market share has always been above 10%, and it has been ranked second in the Thai market for many years. The market sales share of other motorcycle brands in the Thai market has always been less than 5%, and they will not be able to shake the status of Honda and Yamaha in the short term.

From 2018 to 2022, Thailand’s fuel motorcycle production fluctuated. In 2019, Thailand’s motorcycle production volume declined compared with 2018 . In 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19, Thailand’s fuel motorcycle production fell to 1.615 million units, a 17.1% decrease from 2019. From 2021 to 2022, with the recovery of Thailand’s economy, Thailand’s motorcycle production volume will gradually rebound, but it has not yet returned to the level of 2018.

Most motorcycle manufacturing companies are located in the central and eastern regions of Thailand and are close to seaports used for exports, forming motorcycle manufacturer clusters.

2018, Thailand’s domestic sales of fuel motorcycles were approximately 1.79 million units, which dropped to 1.715 million units in 2019 . In 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19, sales volume of fuel motorcycle in Thailand dropped to 1.515 million units. In 2021-2022 , with the gradual recovery of Thailand’s economy, Thailand’s motorcycle sales will gradually recover and return to 1.781 million units in 2022 , which is close to the 2018 level.

As the population grows, consumer spending power increases, new motorcycle registrations increase, and motorcycle manufacturers continue to release new models, CRI predicts that Thailand’s fuel motorcycle market is expected to continue to grow during 2024-2032.

Philippines Steel Industry

Steel has always been an essential raw material in the construction of bridges, buildings, roads and other infrastructure that guided industrialization. The Philippines ranks 20th among major steel importers, according to the World Steel Association. In 2021, the Philippines imported 7.2 million tons of steel from major steel producing countries such as China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Steel is an essential component in ensuring that infrastructure is built and designed to withstand time, weather and stress, so it is important for the Philippines to revive its steel industry to meet the growing demands of urbanization and development.

Among the steel yards mentioned earlier for epidemic prevention, we have to mention Steel Asia. It is the flagship steel company for epidemic prevention and supplies 2 million tons of rebar to the country every year. In 2023, Steel Asia Manufacturing Corp said it had agreed with China’s Bao steel Group, the world’s largest steelmaker, to build a P108 billion integrated steel plant in the defense sector to further expand its infrastructure and production capacity for heavy construction materials.

In the year 2022, as for the Philippines Import Data report, the nation imported iron and steel worth 5.23 billion USD from various nations. The trend of imports of iron and steel is more or less consistent in the past few years with a small decline observed in the year 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. In the year 2021, as for the report, the Philippines was the 28th biggest importer of iron and steel in the world. This was accompanied by iron and steel being the 6th most favorite import product of the Philippines.

The Philippines imported iron and steel from almost all the nations across the globe. If we need to pick the top countries from all, then as for the Philippines trade data records, the top 5 nations from whom the Philippines imported iron and steel in 2022 are as followed: China ranks first with a total of 2.18 billion USD, Japan ranks second with 747.28 million USD, Indonesia and Russia rank third and fourth respectively, and Vietnam ranks fifth with 328.43 million USD. In the previous year 2021, nations like China, Vietnam and Indonesia were the fastest growing countries that exported iron and steel to the Philippines.

As the Philippines is one of the most emerging and rapidly growing nations in the world, it is estimated that the demand for iron and steel would grow in the nation in the coming time. We can forecast this as being a developing nation, development and construction activities in the Philippines will keep on happening on a frequent basis for which iron and steel are needed. The domestic production, as well as international imports of these products, would rise which will create an impact on the Philippines imports data values.

Insurance is a major form of risk management and can be divided into two categories, property insurance and personal insurance, depending on the object of the insurance. Indonesia’s booming economy has contributed to the expansion of its insurance industry. Currently, Indonesia’s insurance industry is still at a certain stage of development, with a steady growth rate of over 10% since 2008, especially in life insurance.

However, it cannot be ignored that the insurance penetration rate in Indonesia is only 3.06% by 2021. The low penetration rate also means a large market for the industry. In addition to exploring the development direction of insurance innovation by itself, Indonesia is also constantly influenced by the technology business model of China and the US.

Indonesia’s insurance industry continues to decline in 2020 and 2021, before seeing a strong rebound in 2022. This growth is driven by strong economic recovery and increased frequency of extreme weather events, which have led to increased demand for natural disaster insurance products. According to CRI’s analysis, total premiums written in Indonesia show a fluctuating growth trend from 2018-2022, with a CAGR of 5.37% from 2018-2022. in 2022, total premiums written in Indonesia will be approximately USD 4.79 billion, an increase of 10.17% year-on-year.

According to CRI, the market size of gross written premiums will reach US$ 8.58 billion in 2032 and the CAGR in 2023 to 2032 is 6.00%.

In Indonesia, life insurance is generally larger than general insurance, with general insurance coming in second. Property insurance is the largest type of general insurance, and CRI expects it to account for 34.5% of general insurance premiums written in Indonesia by 2023. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6% from 2023-27. Growth in residential sector sales and the country’s increased exposure to recurring NatCat events will drive growth in property insurance in the country.
