Philippines Plastic Industry

The Philippines is an archipelago country located in Southeast Asia with a land area of approximately 300,000 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, its population was about 117 million, making it the second-largest consumer market in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia. Since 2000, the Philippines’ economy has been on a rapid upward trajectory. Over the past decade, the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew from US$ 288.15 billion in 2014 to US$ 430.52 billion in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6%.

Although the Philippines’ GDP growth rate of 5.6% in 2023 fell short of the government’s target of 6% to 7% and was lower than the 7.6% growth rate in 2022, it remains one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia.

Driven by the growth of the manufacturing sector and the booming e-commerce industry, the demand of the plastics industry in the Philippines has increased rapidly. According to CRI, plastics are widely used in the manufacturing sector in the Philippines, especially in the packaging and automotive industries. Injection molding systems are in high demand in these industries for producing items such as bottle caps, packaging materials, car dashboards, trays, etc. In addition, extrusion molding is an important production process used for manufacturing plastic parts such as drinking straws, pipes, curtain tracks, wall components, wall protection parts, and automotive parts.

The plastics industry in the Philippines is highly dependent on imports, with over US$ 2 billion worth of plastic raw materials and products imported annually. According to CRI, in 2023, the import value of plastic raw materials and products in the Philippines reached US$ 2.68 billion, accounting for 2.1% of the country’s total imports for the year.

Despite the driving factors, the plastics industry in the Philippines faces some market obstacles. Although the country’s economic growth is commendable, it is essentially still a developing country, and many regions remain at the poverty line, leading to widespread use of plastic bags. Filipinos use over 163 million small plastic bags, 480,000 shopping bags, and 450,000 thin film bags daily, with less than 9% being recycled.

Environmental organizations in the Philippines have long advocated for a ban on single-use plastic products, submitting hundreds of proposed laws and resolutions to Congress over the past decade to support this call. Finally, in 2022, the Philippine Congress passed the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act, requiring companies with assets exceeding 100 million Philippine pesos to develop a plan to recycle an equivalent amount of the plastic they produce, or face fines of at least 5 million Philippine pesos.

The market concentration of the plastics industry in the Philippines is high. According to CRI, the key players in the Philippine plastics market include JG Summit Petrochemicals Group, Chemrez Technologies, NPC Alliance Corporation, Dupont, Philippines Polypropylene Inc., SGS Philippines Inc., and Philippine Resins Industries Inc.

With the continuous growth of the Philippine economy and population, the market size of the plastics industry in the Philippines is expected to continue to grow, and the import value of plastic raw materials and products will also increase. According to CRI, the import value of plastic raw materials and products in the Philippines is expected to reach US$3.66 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.5% from 2024 to 2033.

Philippines Fertilizer Industry

The Philippines has a population of approximately 110 million, ranking second in ASEAN. Agriculture plays an important role in the Philippine economy. 70 % of the country’s population is in rural areas, and a considerable number of rural people rely on agriculture to make a living. According to statistics, the agricultural industry employs 24% of the Philippines’ workforce. Cultivated land and forestland account for 18.7 % of the total land area of the Philippines.

The Philippines has limited fertilizer production capacity, so it needs to import large amounts of fertilizer every year. According to CRI’s analysis, the Philippines’ annual fertilizer imports have exceeded 2 million tons in recent years. The Philippines mainly imports fertilizers from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries.

But the Philippines also exports fertilizers. The main types of chemical fertilizers exported by the Philippines are urea, ammonium sulfate, diamine phosphate, potassium fertilizer and compound fertilizer. Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Zambia, Bulgaria, etc. are the main export markets for fertilizers in the Philippines.

According to CRI’s analysis, although COVID -19 has had a certain adverse impact on the Philippine fertilizer industry in 2020-2021, in 2022-2023, the Philippine fertilizer industry has shown a recovery trend.

Although the demand for fertilizers in the Philippines in 2020 was adversely affected by extreme weather conditions, in general, the operating conditions of enterprises are good, and the operating performance of leading enterprises has increased significantly.

According to CRI’s analysis, the positive outlook for agriculture is a factor driving the growth of fertilizer consumption in the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the agricultural systems most vulnerable to monsoons and other extreme weather events, and these events are expected to create more uncertainty as climate change impacts the country.

Overall, with the growth of the Philippine population and economic development, the demand for chemical fertilizers in the Philippine agriculture and planting industry will continue to rise. The Philippines’ fertilizer imports are expected to continue to grow from 2024 to 2033. CRI predicts that by 2033, the Philippines fertilizer imports will reach 3.39 million tons, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.0 % from 2024 to 2033.

For foreign-funded enterprises, the Philippine fertilizer industry is an area worthy of investment in the next few years.

Philippines Furniture Industry

Furniture, encompassing movable objects facilitating various human activities such as sitting, reclining, or storing items, plays a vital role in enhancing the practicality and visual appeal of both indoor and outdoor spaces. Chairs, tables, beds, desks, and cabinets are among the common examples of furniture serving both functional and aesthetic purposes.

Crafted from diverse materials like wood, metal, plastic, and textiles, furniture has evolved from traditional handmade pieces to mass-produced standardized items with the advent of industrialization. It can be categorized based on its intended use: office furniture tailored for workspaces, outdoor furniture engineered for resilience against weather conditions, and residential furniture focused on comfort and style. The design and arrangement of furniture significantly influence the functionality and ambiance of a space.

Currently, furniture is available in a plethora of styles and designs, ranging from classical and ornate to modern and minimalist, across the Philippines. This wide range aims to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of individuals, highlighting the versatility and adaptability of furniture in meeting evolving lifestyle demands.

The market size of Philippines furniture industry reached US$ 780 million in 2023. The growth in market revenue can largely be attributed to the increase in the number of furniture manufacturers and retail outlets. Moreover, rising urbanization has led to increased demand for furniture in residential, hotel, office, and industrial sectors over the period. In addition, increasing customer awareness about online sales and e-commerce portals for furniture, along with the expansion of services offered by e-retailers such as Lorenz Furniture, has also had a significant impact on the Philippine furniture market in recent years.

The country’s growing middle-class population, coupled with an increasing GDP, has boosted demand for residential property. This surge in demand for housing structures has been the major driver behind the increased demand for furniture in the country. Home furniture therefore dominated the overall Philippines furniture market in 2023, followed by office, hotel and industrial sector.

The Philippines furniture market is largely dominated by the unorganized sector in terms of the number of manufacturers, with approximately 3,720 unorganized furniture companies operating in the country in 2016. This dominance can be attributed to the abundance of raw materials and the availability of cheap, skilled labor, which have fueled the market’s growth. Leveraging locally available resources allows these companies to produce furniture at a lower cost, enabling them to sell products at more competitive prices compared to established companies with multiple retail outlets in the Philippines.

In the Philippines, furniture sales have primarily been dominated by offline retail outlets, franchisee outlets, showrooms, and exclusive stores operated by manufacturers and major players in the industry. Despite the country having approximately 69.05 million internet users in 2023, online sales of furniture made only a minor contribution to overall market revenues. In 2023, brick-and-mortar stores continued to pose significant competition to online players in the Philippines furniture market. These physical retail outlets offered a diverse range of products at competitive prices, attracting a large portion of consumers. Consequently, online sales accounted for only a minor fraction, representing approximately 26.5% of the total sales revenue in the furniture market.

CRI predicts that the furniture industry of Philippines will grow rapidly during the forecast period (2024-2033). Rise in domestic as well export demand of furniture products is anticipated to result in market growth. Since tourism-based enterprises such as hotels, restaurants, museums and leisure service providers face growing needs to update their amenities; the demand for unique furniture items is expected to rise sharply. Apart from the robust hotel sector, construction of more condominiums and residential houses in the country is expected to drive the growth of the industry in the coming years. The property sector’s strong growth and families’ easier access to housing credit will also increase demand for household items and most importantly furniture products.

According to CRI, the furniture industry of Philippines is poised for significant growth, with expectations to reach a market value of US$ 1,715 million in 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.2% from 2024 to 2033. Additionally, the export value of Philippine furniture is forecasted to reach US$ 3 billion in 2033, reflecting a growth rate of 5.5%.

According to CRI, light commercial vehicles and Asian utility vehicles (AUVs) have the highest growth rates. It is expected that total vehicle sales will increase to 400,000 units by the end of 2023. In 2018, the industry produced 79,763 units.

In 2017, the export value of parts and components was US$3.6 billion, and the import value was US$6.6 billion. New car sales increased slightly by 3.7% in 2019, with sales of 416,637 units. According to CRI, passenger cars accounted for 31% of total vehicle sales in 2019. Commercial vehicles account for the remaining 69%. Demand for commercial vehicles has increased with the launch of the government’s $180 billion “Build, Build, Build” infrastructure initiative.

According to CRI, total motor vehicle sales in the country jumped to 352,596 units in 2022 from 268,488 units in 2021, exceeding the full-year sales forecast of 336,000 units. Currently, Japanese brands hold nearly 80% of the market share, followed by Korean brands due to local manufacturing, brand recognition and parts availability. Chinese brands are slowly gaining market share through economical options.

Toyota Motor Philippines contributed the majority of sales at 174,106 units, a 34.3% increase from 2021’s 129,667 units. Toyota Philippines currently holds 49.38% of the total market.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines was the second largest contributor, selling 53,211 vehicles, up 41.7% from 37,548 units in 2021. Rounding out the top three was Ford Motor Company Philippines with 24,710 vehicles sold, a 23.5% increase from 2021’s 20,005 vehicles sold. Motors also account for 7.01% of the local market share. Nissan Philippines ranked fourth with sales of 21,222 units and Suzuki Philippines ranked fifth with sales of 19,942 units.

Insurance is a major form of risk management and can be divided into two categories, property insurance and personal insurance, depending on the object of the insurance. Indonesia’s booming economy has contributed to the expansion of its insurance industry. Currently, Indonesia’s insurance industry is still at a certain stage of development, with a steady growth rate of over 10% since 2008, especially in life insurance.

However, it cannot be ignored that the insurance penetration rate in Indonesia is only 3.06% by 2021. The low penetration rate also means a large market for the industry. In addition to exploring the development direction of insurance innovation by itself, Indonesia is also constantly influenced by the technology business model of China and the US.

Indonesia’s insurance industry continues to decline in 2020 and 2021, before seeing a strong rebound in 2022. This growth is driven by strong economic recovery and increased frequency of extreme weather events, which have led to increased demand for natural disaster insurance products. According to CRI’s analysis, total premiums written in Indonesia show a fluctuating growth trend from 2018-2022, with a CAGR of 5.37% from 2018-2022. in 2022, total premiums written in Indonesia will be approximately USD 4.79 billion, an increase of 10.17% year-on-year.

According to CRI, the market size of gross written premiums will reach US$ 8.58 billion in 2032 and the CAGR in 2023 to 2032 is 6.00%.

In Indonesia, life insurance is generally larger than general insurance, with general insurance coming in second. Property insurance is the largest type of general insurance, and CRI expects it to account for 34.5% of general insurance premiums written in Indonesia by 2023. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6% from 2023-27. Growth in residential sector sales and the country’s increased exposure to recurring NatCat events will drive growth in property insurance in the country.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, Indonesia recorded 3,544 NatCat events in 2022, including 28 earthquakes, 1,531 flood events and 1,068 other extreme weather events. This resulted in 95,403 property damage events, including 20,205 events with severe property damage, and property insurers are expected to incur losses of IDR 2.2 trillion (US$147.4 million) in 2022.

Financial insurance is the second largest insurance category and is expected to account for 22.1% of general insurance premiums by 2023, followed by auto insurance, which CRI expects to account for 17.7%. 25.7%.

Indonesia Washing Machine Industry

Washing machines are household appliances that are widely used to wash clothes using detergents. They include semi-automatic and fully automatic machines that can assist in washing, rinsing and drying without the need to supervise different operations. They can save time and are easier to clean, operate and maintain than other electrical equipment.

They are currently available in a variety of sizes and styles, depending on budget, lifestyle and the size of the user’s home. The increasing purchasing power of washing machines and rising income levels of individuals across the world are currently one of the key factors driving the market. Moreover, the demand for home washing machines is also increasing due to the rising electrification in rural areas.

As Indonesia’s economy develops, disposable income increases and consumption levels rise, the penetration rate of washing machines gradually increases, and consumer demand for washing machines gradually changes from a single cleaning tool to one with diverse functions. According to CRI’s analysis, the penetration rate of washing machines in Indonesia is low and there is huge room for development.

Indonesia’s cheap labor, low land costs and favorable policy subsidies have attracted global washing machine manufacturers to invest in Indonesia. This follows Toshiba’s $39 million investment in a washing machine plant in East Jakarta, aimed at increasing its sales revenue outside of Japan, and Sharp Electronics’ Rp1.2 trillion investment in a new plant in Karawang, West Java, which will more than double the company’s current production capacity in Indonesia for refrigerators and washing machines.

Due to increasing modernization and technological advancements, Indonesia washing machine market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.81% during the forecast period to reach USD 2.45 billion by 2028, according to an analysis by CRI.

Indonesia Electric Vehicle Industry

As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is becoming a key country in global electric vehicle (EV) production. According to Yuan Ze Consulting, Indonesia will produce 2.2 million electric vehicles by 2030. Indonesia is rich in nickel natural resources, with up to 52% of the world’s nickel resources. This puts the country in a key position in the global battery production supply chain.

The Indonesian government strongly supports the development of the electric vehicle industry, and the government plans to build an all-electric bus fleet for Jakarta’s metropolitan public transportation system in less than seven years, requiring 14,000 electric buses to achieve this goal. State-owned electric utility PLN has also committed to installing 31,000 additional electric vehicle charging stations by 2030. PLN has provided $3.7 billion in commercial and public sector investments in Indonesia to meet its 10-year commitment.

In addition, various government programs to increase the capacity of electric vehicles are underway. Various government support policies have also attracted a number of international automotive giants to Indonesia. Hyundai and LG, two Korean conglomerates, have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian government to form a joint venture company in Karawang, West Java specializing in electric vehicle battery production. The $1.1 billion company plans to produce more than 150,000 electric car batteries annually.

In addition, the Indonesian government is attempting to reduce emissions by 29% over the ne
xt decade, which is also conducive to the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market. CRI forecasts that electric vehicle sales in Indonesia will surge in the coming years. Electric passenger car sales are expected to reach 250,000 units in 2030, accounting for 16 percent of all new passenger car sales, while demand for electric motorcycles is expected to reach 1.9 million units, accounting for 30 percent of all new two-wheelers sold. CRI expects the market size of electric vehicles in Indonesia to reach USD 2.02 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 20.96% from 2022-2029.

Indonesia Bus Industry

Commercial buses are an important means of transportation for transporting large numbers of passengers and their belongings, and are a type of commercial vehicle that operate within or between cities. Indonesia has a large population and a large area, and there is a great demand for commercial buses in metropolitan areas or in rural areas with poor infrastructure.

Indonesia’s well-developed tourism industry attracts many tourists to visit Indonesia every year. Bus travel is a popular and affordable way to visit Indonesia, and with bus connections to most major towns and cities, it is very convenient for tourists and the demand for road passenger transportation is growing. And with Indonesia’s regional economic development, more investment in infrastructure construction, and gradual improvement in road conditions, the Indonesian bus industry has great potential for future growth.

In 2022, Indonesia received 4.6 million visitors, just 28% of the 16 million visitors it will receive in 2019. As the economy recovers and tourism is gradually recovering, CRI expects Indonesia’s visitor arrivals to grow rapidly in 2023.

From 2018 to 2022, according to CRI’s analysis, the number of buses in operation in Indonesia shows an overall rising trend with a CAGR of 2.00% from 2018 to 2022, which indicates that the net increase in buses in Indonesia has been positive every year for the last five years, and the number of buses in operation has been increasing year by year. at the end of 2022, the number of buses in operation in Indonesia is 241,000, an increase of 1.54% year-on-year.

According to CRI, the number of buses in use will reach US$ 271.53 thousand in 2032 and the CAGR in 2023 to 2032 is 1.2%。

The Indonesian government is developing extensive infrastructure development plans, especially road transportation related infrastructure development. In recent years, public transportation in Jakarta and its surrounding areas has grown rapidly, doubling in the past two years. This is bound to have some impact on the ecological environment of the city, so the Indonesian government intends to focus on the electric transportation industry to reduce the environmental impact of heavy traffic commuting. The Ministry of Transportation expects to put in 41,000 electric buses, and the first phase is expected to put in 1,000 volumes of electric buses per year.

In addition, according to CRI, by 2030, the Indonesian government is expected to invest a total of $450 billion in infrastructure projects, including toll roads, new intercity highways (Trans-Javanese, Trans-Sumatra, Trans-Sulawesi, Trans-Kalimantan, Trans-Papua), BRT systems, railroad projects (MRT, LRT, High and High Speed Rail), new airports, new ports, etc. This will contribute to the development of Indonesia’s transportation sector, especially land transport.
