Malaysia Plastic Industry

Malaysia is one of the economically advanced countries in Southeast Asia, with a per capita GDP reaching USD 13,034 in 2023. The plastics industry in Malaysia serves sectors such as packaging, electronics, automotive, and construction. The industry is well-developed and a significant contributor to high-skilled and high-income employment in the country. In 2019, investments exceeding MYR 18 billion (approximately USD 3.769 billion) flowed towards Malaysia, spurring over 1,500 manufacturing projects. According to CRI, despite the global economic slowdown and the EU’s restrictions on single-use plastics, Malaysia’s plastic industry shows considerable growth potential driven by the demand for electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage products.

Following the pandemic, Malaysia’s plastic industry experienced a recovery. In 2023, Malaysia’s imports of plastics and related products reached USD 8.479 billion. China was a major source, with Malaysia importing USD 2.189 billion worth of plastics from China, accounting for 25.81% of the total imports for the year based on the analysis of CRI.

In terms of exports, the value of Malaysia’s plastics and plastic products decreased during the pandemic but quickly rebounded, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. In 2023, Malaysia’s exports of plastics and related products amounted to USD 9.032 billion. China, Singapore, and Indonesia were the main export markets, with exports to China reaching USD 2.168 billion, representing about 24% of the total.

In December 2021, the Malaysian government released the “Malaysia Plastic Sustainability Roadmap 2021-2030” as a comprehensive strategy to address plastic waste issues. The demand for bioplastics is also driving the development of the plastic industry in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s plastic industry holds substantial potential for foreign investors. The sector has promising investment prospects in high-end plastic products and engineering plastics in the coming years. Advanced waste management infrastructure also supports plastic recycling.

The Malaysian plastic market comprises many foreign or joint venture enterprises, competing alongside local companies. According to CRI, key local players include BP Plastics Holding Bhd and Commercial Plastic Industries. Foreign and joint venture firms dominate significant market shares, including Toray Plastics Sdn Bhd, Polyplastics Asia-Pacific Sdn Bhd, and Lotte Chemical Titan Holding Berhad. Notably, Toray Plastics Sdn Bhd established a plant in Malaysia in 1990, commencing production in early 1992; Polyplastics Asia-Pacific Sdn Bhd established the PAP Kuantan plant in 2000 with a production capacity of 30,000 tons annually; and Lotte Chemical Titan Holding Berhad began constructing its polypropylene plant in 2017.

CRI projects that the market size of Malaysia’s plastic industry will continue to grow in the coming years. Both imports and exports are expected to rise. By 2033, Malaysia’s imports of plastics and related products are projected to reach USD 9.84 billion, with a CAGR of approximately 1.5% from 2024 to 2033.

Malaysia Corrugated Packaging Industry

Malaysia, situated in Southeastern Asia near the equator, had a population of approximately 33.4 million people by the end of 2023. According to CRI analysis, Malaysia’s per capita GDP exceeds US$ 10,000, classifying it as a relatively developed nation within Southeast Asia. The manufacturing sector is a major component of Malaysia’s economy, contributing more than US$ 70 billion in 2023, which accounts for over 20% of the GDP.

The packaging production industry is among the fastest-growing industries in Malaysia. Propelled by advancements in manufacturing, as well as the burgeoning e-commerce and logistics sectors, the Malaysian corrugated packaging industry has maintained a consistent growth trajectory. According to CRI analysis, Malaysia hosts over 1,000 corrugated packaging manufacturers, and in 2023, the market size for Malaysian corrugated packaging was approximately US$ 597 million.

The production and sales of corrugated packaging are closely linked to the developments within the manufacturing and logistics industries. According to CRI analysis, Malaysia’s manufacturing sector continues to lead in Southeast Asia, showing a modest growth of 0.8% in 2023. Key expanding sectors within the industry include food, beverages and tobacco; and textiles, clothing, leather, and footwear. The evolution of these sectors has significantly spurred the growth of Malaysia’s corrugated packaging industry.

Malaysia’s strategic location and economic growth have also fueled the expansion of the logistics industry, with e-commerce playing a crucial role. Despite not being as large as Indonesia’s or Thailand’s, Malaysia’s e-commerce market size is comparable to that of Vietnam and the Philippines. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated online shopping habits among Malaysian consumers.

In 2023, with more than 30 million active internet users, the GMV of Malaysia’s e-commerce sector reached US$ 13 billion. The boom in e-commerce has not only bolstered the express delivery industry but has also significantly enhanced the corrugated packaging industry in Malaysia.

According to CRI analysis, the Malaysian corrugated packaging market is currently highly fragmented, with numerous local companies such as Mabuchi Package (M) Sdn Bhd, Biszon Flexipack Sdn Bhd, and Far East Corrugated Carton Industrial Sdn. Bhd. playing significant roles. Additionally, international firms like International Paper Packaging Malaysia Johor Sdn Bhd, Westrock Packaging Solutions (M) Sdn. Bhd., and Amcor PLC have established their presence through foreign investment or joint ventures.

Looking ahead, CRI predicts that with ongoing population growth and economic development, the Malaysian corrugated packaging industry will continue to expand. By 2033, the market size is projected to reach US$ 1.39 billion, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.8% from 2024 to 2033.

Malaysia Cement Industry

Malaysia’s GDP per capita is over US$ 10,000, ranking third in Southeast Asia. Malaysia’s manufacturing and construction industries are leading in Southeast Asia. The cement industry is also one of the important industries in Malaysia.

The demand for cement in Malaysia remains strong, largely driven by ongoing major infrastructure projects. These projects are key pillars supporting the medium-to-long-term growth of the cement industry, indicating a potential increase in construction activities across Peninsular Malaysia.

Several factors contribute to the buoyancy of Malaysia’s cement industry. Low inventory levels, along with a focus on emerging sectors like solar panels and electric vehicles, coupled with the anticipated recovery in China’s manufacturing and property sectors, are expected to fuel future demand growth.

Recent trends indicate a robust performance in the cement market, with bulk cement prices experiencing a notable 24.7% year-on-year increase in August 2023. This surge contrasts with the three-year average price reported between 2019 and 2021, signaling the industry’s strength and resilience.

Despite the promising outlook, the cement industry faces various challenges. Rising operational costs, driven by factors such as escalating raw material prices, soaring coal costs, and increased shipping expenses, pose significant challenges to businesses operating in the sector. Additionally, the appreciation of the US dollar against the ringgit further tightens profit margins.

The surge in coal prices is identified as a major contributor to the rise in cement prices, with forecasts indicating a continuation of this trend due to strong demand in ASEAN nations. The withdrawal of electricity subsidies for industrial customers exacerbates the situation, further increasing the cost of production.

Supply chain disruptions and regional disparities also complicate matters for the cement industry. Businesses importing cement or raw materials face challenges in maintaining sustainable profit margins, particularly in regions like Sarawak, where a shortage of cement, combined with escalating shipping costs and currency strength, leads to significantly higher prices compared to other parts of Malaysia.

Moreover, balancing supply and demand poses a significant challenge, particularly in regions experiencing rapid infrastructure development. Sarawak, for example, faces a surge in cement demand due to major infrastructure projects, necessitating local producers to ensure an adequate supply to meet escalating requirements.

In conclusion, while Malaysia’s cement industry benefits from strong demand driven by infrastructure projects and emerging sectors, various challenges such as rising operational costs, supply chain disruptions, and regional disparities must be addressed to sustain growth and stability in the market. According to CRI, Malaysia cement production is projected to increase from 24.05 million metric tonnes in 2024 to 33.35 million metric tonnes by 2033, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7%.

Malaysia Furniture Industry

Malaysia’s per capita GDP is over 10,000 dollars, which is the third highest in ASEAN. The industry is mainly concentrated in the fields of electronics, petroleum, chemicals, textiles, wood processing and food processing. Malaysia’s furniture industry is one of the sub-sectors of wood processing.

Malaysia expects foreigners to use Malaysia as a production base to expand into the ASEAN market, and products manufactured in Malaysia can enjoy various tax incentives under the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA). Malaysia offers a number of incentives to foreign investors, depending on the size and scope of the company’s investment, as well as the sector or industry in which it is investing. Furniture manufacturing is also one of the industries that the Malaysian government encourages foreign investment in.

The success of Malaysia’s furniture industry is closely linked to the resurgence of rubberwood. The transformation of rubberwood into a major source of timber breathed new life into the industry. From then on, Malaysia became a leading producer and exporter of wooden furniture to over 160 countries worldwide. Currently, the Malaysian furniture industry has secured its place among the top 10 furniture exporters in the world, with approximately 80% of its production destined for international markets.

According to CRI, the market size of Malaysia furniture industry is expected to reach USD 1.9 billion by 2024. Approximately 80-85% of Malaysia’s furniture is exported, with the major exporting countries being the United States, Japan and Australia. Wooden furniture accounts for the lion’s share of exported furniture. Since 2022, the US household market has started to cool down after the Federal Reserve started to raise interest rates, which has directly led to a decline in Malaysia’s furniture exports.

According to CRI’s analysis, the market size of Malaysia furniture industry will reach US$ 3.9 billion in 2033 with a CAGR of 5.9% from 2024 to 2033.

In the future, Malaysia furniture market will continue to expand. It will be driven by several major growth drivers. First, a growing urban population and rising disposable incomes are driving consumer demand for home furnishings and modern furniture designs. In addition, the growing influence of e-commerce and digital marketing channels is expanding the market’s reach and accessibility to a wider customer base. As sustainability and eco-friendly practices gain prominence, the market is benefiting from a shift towards eco-friendly materials and production methods. According to CRI, the adaptability of the Malaysian furniture market, coupled with these growth drivers, positions it for continued expansion and competitiveness in the global furniture industry.

Malaysia Construction Industry

The construction industry encompasses a wide range of activities, including planning, design, and execution, aimed at creating various physical structures such as buildings, infrastructure, and more. It involves the collaboration of professionals such as architects, engineers, contractors, and workers to complete projects ranging from residential and commercial buildings to roads, bridges, and utilities. Despite the diversity of projects, they all contribute to the improvement and development of communities and infrastructure.

In any country, the construction industry is significant, serving as a pillar of the economy while having a direct impact on the quality of life and urban landscape. According to CRI, the industry’s prosperity often reflects the nation’s economic health and stage of development. In addition, its growth influences other sectors such as real estate, manufacturing, and finance, and thus has an impact on the broader economy. Therefore, the construction industry typically occupies a prominent position and exerts considerable influence within a country.

The construction market in Malaysia is divided into six sectors, namely Commercial Construction, Industrial Construction, Infrastructure Construction, Energy and Utilities Construction, Institutional Construction and Residential Construction. In 2023, the infrastructure construction sector accounted for the highest market share, followed by residential construction.

Strengths of Malaysian construction sector are attributed by capabilities of Malaysian construction companies to implement projects namely construction of buildings, roads and highways, railways, bridges and airports, water treatment and power plants; steel structure fabrication, installation and erection; mixed development projects including housing, hotels, leisure and luxury residences; and building maintenance, including for high-rise towers.

The steady growth of the Malaysian economy has provided a solid foundation for the expansion of the construction industry. Economic growth has driven demand for residential, commercial and industrial buildings as well as increased investment in infrastructure projects. The Malaysian government has played an important role in promoting the construction industry by stimulating the economy through the implementation of various construction projects and infrastructure programs such as the construction of roads, bridges and public transportation systems. In addition, the government has also introduced social welfare programs such as low-cost housing schemes, further boosting the demand for the construction sector.

Malaysia’s construction industry has attracted significant FDI, particularly in the real estate and commercial construction sectors. Foreign investors are optimistic about Malaysia’s high growth potential and strategic position, which has boosted the construction sector.

In 2023, the Malaysia construction market size was estimated at USD 35.5 billion. According to CRI’s analysis, the Malaysia construction market size is expected to reach 67.3 billion USD in 2033, growing at a CAGR of 6.6%. Although the Malaysian construction industry will face the challenges of lack of skilled labor and lax regulation, it will continue to grow in the future with the support of government policies and advanced technology.

Malaysia Automobile Industry

Since the first domestic automobile “PROTON” was manufactured in 1983, the automotive industry has become one of the major industries supporting the Malaysian economy. Currently, there are more than 20 manufacturing and assembly plants in Malaysia, where passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, scooters, etc. are manufactured.

In 2022, the total number of automobiles manufactured and assembled was approximately 702,300 for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, an increase of 41.6% compared to 2021. Passenger car sales increased 41.8% to 641,773 units. Commercial vehicle sales rose 39.9% to 78,885 units. Malaysian automobile production increased 27.2% year-on-year to 68,881 units in December. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia is the third largest after Thailand and Indonesia.

The Malaysian automobile market is a market with great potential, and it has also attracted a large number of investors and foreign brands to join. During the first six months of 2023,auto sales in Malaysia totalled 366,037 units according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). This represents a 10.3% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to the same period last year. Perodua is unsurprisingly leading in terms of total vehicle sales in 1H 2023 with 144,690 units, which is enough for a market share of 39.5%.

Both figures are higher than in 1H 2022, when Perodua managed 127,343 deliveries and a market share of 38.4%. Meanwhile, Proton is second place with 76,012 units, up 32.4% from the 57,402 units in 1H 2022. The national carmaker’s market share has also gone up by 3.5% YoY to hit 20.8% in 1H 2023. Coming in third place is Toyota with 48,145 units and a market share of 13.2% – the former is higher than the 45,449 units recorded in 1H 2022, but the latter is actually down by 0.5%.

Malaysia has great advantages in developing the automobile industry and launched Malaysia’s first national automobile policy (NAP2006) in 2006. The policy-driven NAP has played an important role in boosting the Malaysian automotive industry so far. Malaysia has strengths in services related to the mobile industry and the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry. With these advantages of the country, Malaysia has set up three challenging new elements.

In order to continue to develop the automotive industry, which leads the mobility industry, integration with the service industry and the electrical and electronics industry is key according to the vision of NAP2020. Cooperation with the electrical and electronics industry will deepen, as shown in the development roadmap for components important for next-generation vehicles. The future automobile industry will have in-depth cooperation with the power electronics industry from the development stage, which may promote cross-industry integration and lead to substantial changes in the supply chain of the automobile industry.

Nowadays, the development of electric vehicles has become an emerging trend around the world. However, Malaysia’s existing EV infrastructure is still lacking, particularly the lack of EV charging stations.

Currently, Malaysia only has about 600 EV charging stations, which are insufficient to cater to a broad EV market. Barriers to developing the EV ecosystem in Malaysia include high costs and inadequate supporting infrastructure, including component shortages, lack of EV experts and skills, electricity grid challenges, increased demand for lithium-ion batteries, and lack of EV charging standards. Although Malaysia is an upper-middle-income country, and EV owners can also claim tax relief for owning one of those vehicles, EVs remain prohibitively expensive for many people.

Malaysia Steel Industry

Malaysia occupies an indispensable part of the ASEAN economy, with a total land area of 330,803 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, Malaysia’s population is approximately 32.6 million people.

The steel industry in Malaysia can be categorically subdivided into two main segments, namely the long products and the flat products. Malaysia’s steel production capacity is approximately 16.1 million tons. According to CRI, at present, the bulk of the Malaysian steel is produced using the electric-arc-furnace (EAF) route, melting scrap iron, or scrap-substitutes like DRI and HBI to produce molten steel. The top three steel companies in Malaysia are Southern Steel Group, Prestar Resources Berhad, Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd.

Scrap, the main ingredient in steel production, is mainly imported from countries such as the European Union and the United States, as domestic supplies are insufficient to meet the needs of local industry. Currently, only Perwaja Steel and Amsteel Mills produce DRI and HBI at their plants in Kemaman and Labuan respectively. Since DRI and HBI command a higher premium than scrap due to their “clean” content, a large portion is exported to countries such as Vietnam, South Korea, China and Taiwan. Malaysia’s iron & steel import in March 2022 grew by 21.6 percent to RM3.1 billion from RM2.6 billion in March 2021.

In recent years, the import volume of the Malaysian steel industry has remained with slight fluctuations. It remained at around 31 billion Malaysian ringgit in 2018 and 2019. There has been a considerable decline in 2020, falling to 24.3 billion Malaysian ringgit, most likely due to the impact of the new coronavirus There are no import channels for the impact. By 2021 and 2022, the number of imported steel products in Malaysia has increased significantly to more than 33 billion Malaysian ringgit. According to CRI, this shows that the current dependence on imported steel in the Malaysian market is gradually increasing.

Looking at the total export value of the steel industry, it is found that the export value of the steel industry is increasing year by year. It has climbed from 15503.92 million Malaysian Ringgit at the beginning to 33354.39 million Malaysian Ringgit today. This shows that Malaysia’s steel industry is in a state of continuous development and that Malaysia’s steel industry is developing rapidly.

In 2023 and 2024, considering that total steel demand will grow by 4.1%, but with the increase in steel production capacity, actual demand growth is expected to be 3.6% in 2023 and 4.8% in 2024, and exports are expected to increase further.

Faced with multiple crises such as the epidemic, geopolitical tensions and wars, financial instability and climate change, the future of the steel market industry in Malaysia and globally is not optimistic. According to CRI, as China is Malaysia’s largest import and export trading country, but China currently has chronic overcapacity, Malaysian steel manufacturers are unlikely to benefit from the expected increase in domestic steel consumption. For the Malaysian steel industry to have a sustainable future, the industry and the government must jointly address three major challenges, namely overcapacity in construction steel, green transformation and financing transformation.

Indonesia Washing Machine Industry

Washing machines are household appliances that are widely used to wash clothes using detergents. They include semi-automatic and fully automatic machines that can assist in washing, rinsing and drying without the need to supervise different operations. They can save time and are easier to clean, operate and maintain than other electrical equipment.

They are currently available in a variety of sizes and styles, depending on budget, lifestyle and the size of the user’s home. The increasing purchasing power of washing machines and rising income levels of individuals across the world are currently one of the key factors driving the market. Moreover, the demand for home washing machines is also increasing due to the rising electrification in rural areas.

As Indonesia’s economy develops, disposable income increases and consumption levels rise, the penetration rate of washing machines gradually increases, and consumer demand for washing machines gradually changes from a single cleaning tool to one with diverse functions. According to CRI’s analysis, the penetration rate of washing machines in Indonesia is low and there is huge room for development.

Indonesia’s cheap labor, low land costs and favorable policy subsidies have attracted global washing machine manufacturers to invest in Indonesia. This follows Toshiba’s $39 million investment in a washing machine plant in East Jakarta, aimed at increasing its sales revenue outside of Japan, and Sharp Electronics’ Rp1.2 trillion investment in a new plant in Karawang, West Java, which will more than double the company’s current production capacity in Indonesia for refrigerators and washing machines.

Due to increasing modernization and technological advancements, Indonesia washing machine market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.81% during the forecast period to reach USD 2.45 billion by 2028, according to an analysis by CRI.
