Southeast Asia Sweeping Robot Industry

A sweeping robot is an intelligent cleaning appliance that relies on artificial intelligence to automatically complete floor cleaning in a room. The robot is equipped with a vacuum device with dust collection facilities, which sucks up the floor debris into its own waste storage box and controls the walking path through the body’s built-in microprocessor to complete the function of floor cleaning. Sweeping robots are mainly used in home space and office space.

Sweeping robots were first popular in developed countries such as Europe and the US, and then gradually spread to other countries. According to CRI’s analysis, with the development of Southeast Asia’s economy, the size of the middle class has expanded, residents have become more educated, and more and more Southeast Asian women have entered the workplace from their families, and the demand for intelligent cleaning appliances such as sweeping robots has risen. Sweeping robot brands in Southeast Asian countries are mainly foreign brands, mainly from China, South Korea, Germany and the U.S. Xiaomi, Coors and Samsung are the main leaders of the sweeping robot market in Southeast Asia. Coors’ brand marketing campaign in Vietnam focuses on housewives and modern women, with over 64% of Vietnamese women interested in the topic.

Southeast Asia has cheap labor and lower production costs, taking over the global industrial chain transfer. According to CRI’s analysis, some companies have already set up sweeping robot manufacturing plants in Southeast Asia, such as Fujia, a Chinese cleaning appliance ODM OEM company, mainly engaged in vacuum cleaners, sweeping robots and other home appliances. In 2021, Fujia’s production base in Vietnam went into operation and doubled its production capacity in 2022.

Southeast Asia in this report includes 10 countries: Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia. With a total population of nearly 700 million by the end of 2022, Southeast Asia has an overall economic growth rate higher than the global average and is one of the key drivers of future global economic growth.

According to CRI’s analysis, the economic levels of the 10 Southeast Asian countries vary greatly, with Singapore being the only developed country with a per capita GDP of about US$79,000 in 2022. While Myanmar and Cambodia will have a GDP per capita of less than US$2,000 in 2022. The population and minimum wage levels of each country also vary greatly. Brunei, which has the smallest population, will have a total population of less than 500,000 people in 2022, while Indonesia, which has the largest population, will have a population of about 280 million people in 2022.

CRI expects the Southeast Asian sweeping robot industry to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

Southeast Asia Glass Industry

Glass is a transparent, brittle, impermeable, and hard material. Glass is chemically inert in the daily environment and is a common industrial material. According to the difference of glass production process and materials, glass can be divided into more than ten categories such as reinforced glass, laminated glass, dimming glass, self-cleaning glass, embossed glass, etc., which are used in different fields.

There are some differences in the degree of development of the glass industry in Southeast Asia in different countries. According to CRI’s analysis, the glass industry in some Southeast Asian countries is more developed. For example, Indonesia’s glass industry has developed rapidly in recent years, thanks to Indonesia’s strong growth in the construction industry and the automotive industry, Indonesia’s glass market industry scale gradually expanded.

In the construction industry, for example, glass is often used in the curtain wall of buildings, doors, windows, escalator stopper, etc. Indonesia has a large population and to meet the growing population, Indonesia builds about 720,000- 760,000 new housing units every year, but there is still a shortage of about 160,000- 200,000 housing units. The huge construction projects make the demand for glass in Indonesia grow.

Southeast Asian countries have abundant labor and lower production costs, attracting global glass manufacturers to gradually shift their production capacity to the region. According to CRI’s analysis, as early as 1986, glass giant AGC established a joint venture in Indonesia, PT Asahimas, which has become the largest float glass producer in Indonesia with an annual production capacity of 720,000 tons. In 2021, Korean glass producer KCC Glass Group started construction of a float glass production plant in Indonesia and plans to put it into operation in 2024, with an expected annual production capacity of 438,000 tons.

CRI expects the Southeast Asian glass industry to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

Southeast Asia Camera Industry

A camera is a device that uses the optical imaging principle to form an image and uses a negative to record the image, and is an optical instrument used for photography. Cameras can be used in a wide range of applications such as daily photography, industry, security, retail, intelligent transportation systems, and microscope applications.

The camera industry in Southeast Asia varies somewhat in terms of the degree of development in different countries. According to CRI’s analysis, Singapore has a developed economy and high per capita disposable income, and in 2018, about 7 Singaporeans owned 1 camera, with a high camera penetration rate, and cameras have become part of Singaporeans’ daily life.

However, in less economically developed countries such as Vietnam, the camera ownership rate is very low, with only 3 cameras per 100 Vietnamese. With the development of Vietnam’s economy, the future of Vietnam’s camera market is promising.

Southeast Asian countries have lower land and utility costs and abundant labor resources, which have attracted global camera manufacturers to gradually shift production capacity to Southeast Asia. According to CRI analysis, Canon produces camera parts such as shutter device and aperture detector in Malaysia; by the end of 2021, Nikon has shut down its camera production base in Sendai, Japan, and transferred all Nikon’s camera production lines to Thailand; by the end of 2022, Sony will also transfer the cameras sold in Japan, the U.S., Europe and other regions to Thailand factory production.

Vietnam Pepper Industry

Vietnam is one of the most economically active countries in the world, with a GDP growth of 8.02% year-on-year and a GDP per capita of US$4,110 in 2022, up 10.6% year-on-year. Vietnam’s agriculture is more developed and is dominated by plantations, with rice, cashew nuts, coffee and pepper being the country’s main crops.

The dual value of pepper in flavoring and medicine makes it highly prized, and pepper powder is one of the most common and widely used spices in the world. According to CRI analysis, pepper is the most widely traded spice cash crop in the world in terms of monetary value.

Vietnam is the world’s largest producer and exporter of pepper, producing more than 40 percent of the world’s pepper and accounting for about 60 percent of the global pepper export market. More than 130,000 hectares of pepper are planted throughout Vietnam, with an annual production of up to 250,000 tons, and the Central Highlands and Southeast regions are the main pepper-producing areas of Vietnam.

About 95% of Vietnam’s pepper is exported. According to CRI’s analysis, the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, which takes effect in 2020, makes Vietnamese pepper exported to European countries enjoy zero tariff preferences, which is more advantageous compared to pepper-producing countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and India. From January to November 2022, Vietnam exported 208,200 tons of pepper, with an export value of US$897 million, up 3.43% year-on-year.

CRI expects the Vietnam pepper industry to maintain growth from 2023-2032 as the country actively develops potential markets and promotes export market diversification.

Southeast Asia Tile Industry

Tile is a building and decorative material formed by grinding, mixing, pressing, glazing and sintering of refractory metal oxides and semi-metallic oxides. With beautiful appearance and durable texture, tiles are mainly used for covering floors and walls, as well as in kitchens and showers.

According to CRI’s analysis, with the economic development of Southeast Asian countries, the government continues to increase investment in public infrastructure, industrial facilities and residential construction, and the level of urbanization is gradually increasing, driving the development of Southeast Asia’s construction and building materials industry.

In Vietnam, for example, in 2022, 8,593 new enterprises were established in the real estate sector, up 13.7% year-on-year, and the total volume of apartments and single-family houses reached 150,000 units, with a much higher market absorption capacity than in 2021. Tile is one of the most used materials in building decoration, and the development of the real estate industry is driving up the market demand for tile in Vietnam.

There are differences in the degree of development of Southeast Asian tile industry in different countries. According to the analysis of CRI, some Southeast Asian countries have a large scale of tile manufacturing industry. For example, Vietnam is one of the world’s largest tile exporters, with products exported to many countries such as Japan, the United States, Australia, Thailand and Cambodia. Vietnam’s tile market is more fragmented and competitive. Taicera Enterprise Company, Toko Vietnam Co. Ltd, Prime Group and Bach Thanh Ceramic Co. Ltd are some of the larger tile companies in Vietnam’s tile market.

CRI expects the Southeast Asian tile industry to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

Southeast Asia Chemical Industry

Chemical industry is an industry that produces chemical products and serves all sectors of the national economy and all aspects of people’s lives, involving many industries. Chemical industry can be generally divided into inorganic chemical industry, basic organic chemical industry, polymer chemical industry and fine chemical industry, which are mainly used in the fields of energy, automobile, medical, agriculture, electronics, construction and so on.

Chemical industry is the basis of heavy industry. According to CRI’s analysis, with the economic development of Southeast Asian countries, the demand for various chemical products is also gradually growing, promoting the development of the chemical industry in Southeast Asia. Taking Vietnam as an example, in 2022 Vietnam released the “Vietnam Chemical Industry Development Strategy 2030” (Resolution No. 726/QD-TTg), striving for an average growth rate of 10%-11% in the chemical industry by 2030, and expecting that by 2040, Vietnam will adopt advanced technologies to produce products that meet international standards and participate deeply in the global value chain.

The degree of development of the chemical industry in Southeast Asia varies greatly from country to country. For example, Singapore is one of the world’s major energy and chemical centers, about 100 global chemical companies operating in Singapore, the chemical industry has also become the second largest industry in Singapore’s manufacturing sector. Vietnam’s chemical industry, on the other hand, is developing rapidly, but with relatively backward technology and low labor productivity, it cannot meet the needs of other economic sectors and has great potential for future growth.

CRI expects the Southeast Asian chemical industry to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

Southeast Asia Confectionery Industry

Confectionery, refers to snack foods with sugar as the main ingredient. There is a wide variety of candies, which can be divided into hard candy, hard sandwich candy fruit, creamy candy fruit, gel candy, polished candy, gum-based candy, inflatable candy and pressed candy.

The confectionery industry is one of the pillar industries in the casual snacks sector. According to CRI’s analysis, with the rapid economic growth in Southeast Asia, the size of the middle class has expanded and the lifestyle has changed. The pressure of daily life and work has increased, and sweets such as candy have the effect of relieving stress and delighting the mood, so the demand for candy among Southeast Asian people has expanded.

In addition, Southeast Asian residents’ disposable income has increased, consumption ability has been enhanced, the desire to buy casual snacks has been raised, and the variety and taste of confectionery has become the choice of Southeast Asian consumers, promoting the development of the confectionery industry.

There are disparities in the degree of development of confectionery industry in Southeast Asia in different countries. Take Vietnam as an example, the confectionery industry in Vietnam is growing rapidly, and the Vietnamese confectionery industry continues to grow at a rate of approximately 15% per year, with a revenue volume of US$7.8 billion in 2022. According to CRI’s analysis, brands such as Kinh Do, Huu Nghi, Bibica, Hai Ha and Orion are the major leaders in Vietnam’s confectionery industry. And Vietnam’s per capita consumption of confectionery is about 2 kg, which is lower than the world average and still has great room for growth.

Southeast Asia Cassava Industry

Cassava is one of the world’s three major potatoes, widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, with characteristics of rough and easy to plant, fast growth, high yield, strong adaptability and wide range of uses, known as the “king of starch” and “underground breadbasket”. According to CRI analysis, cassava is also an excellent industrial raw material, which can be processed and produced into five series of more than 2,000 varieties of products, such as starch sugar, starch, alcohol, organic chemicals and fine chemicals, which are used in food, medicine, alcohol, textile, paper, sugar and paint.

Most Southeast Asian countries are traditional agricultural countries and are important producers and suppliers of crops globally. According to CRI’s analysis, with the economic growth in Southeast Asia and the development of downstream applications in the cassava industry, the market demand for cassava has gradually expanded and the production of cassava in Southeast Asia has increased. In addition to meeting domestic demand, Southeast Asia also exports a large amount of cassava to other overseas regions.

There are disparities in the degree of development of the cassava industry in Southeast Asia in different countries. According to CRI’s analysis, the cassava industry in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam is large in scale. For example, Thailand is the world’s leading cassava producer and exporter, with a cassava plantation area of more than 8 million Thai acres and an annual output of more than 30 million tons, and the export volume of Thai cassava and its products reached 11.18 million tons in 2022.

Cambodia is also one of the top ten cassava exporters in the world. After the rice industry, cassava industry has become the second pillar industry of Cambodian agriculture. Cambodia has also promulgated the National Cassava Policy 2020-2025, which plans to promote the transformation and upgrading of its cassava industry to produce more high value-added cassava products for a larger global cassava market share.

CRI expects the Southeast Asian cassava industry to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

Southeast Asia Textile Industry

Textile refers to the process of processing textile fibers and other raw materials into products. With the continuous development and improvement of the textile knowledge system and discipline system, in addition to traditional hand spinning and weaving, non-woven fabric technology, modern three-dimensional weaving technology and modern electrostatic nanoweb formation technology are widely used in the production of textiles for clothing, household and technical use.

According to CRI’s analysis, Southeast Asia has abundant labor resources and lower costs for electricity, land and transportation, which have attracted global textile companies to shift their production capacity to the region. In Vietnam, for example, leading textile company TEXHONG TEXTILE entered the country in 2006, and in 2017, TEXHONG TEXTILE’s yarn capacity in the region reached 1.25 million spindles, accounting for 41% of total yarn capacity.

In 2021, TEXHONG TEXTILE leased 383,800 square meters of land in Hai Ho Industrial Zone and plans to build a new production base to further expand its capacity in Vietnam. Bros Eastern also laid out in Vietnam in 2013 and has expanded rapidly with tax incentives and low production costs, reaching 1 million spindles of capacity, accounting for 60% of Bros Eastern’s total production capacity.

There are some differences in the degree of development of the textile industry in Southeast Asia in different countries. According to CRI’s analysis, countries such as Vietnam have a more developed textile industry, such as Vietnam’s textile industry has attracted a large influx of foreign investment, and its production capacity and scale have been rapidly enhanced, with Vietnam’s textile exports reaching US$34.646 billion in January-November 2022.

According to the Textile and Footwear Industry Development Strategy to 2023 and Outlook 2035, Vietnam plans to reach a total textile and footwear export of US$108 billion by 2030. However, Vietnam’s textile industry chain is not yet sound, although the trade surplus of ready-made garments, but fabrics and raw materials, etc. are in deficit, there is still great room for future development.

Southeast Asia in this report includes 10 countries: Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia.
