In China, soft drinks are natural or artificial drinks with alcohol content of less than 0.5%. Soft drinks can be classified into bottled drinking water, carbonated beverages, fruit and vegetable beverages, tea beverages, vegetable protein and milk beverages, energy drinks and others.

According to CRI, during the decade following China joining WTO, China’s economy grew rapidly and residents’ income increased, driving demand for soft drinks. In 2015, the total production volume of soft drinks in China was 183.45 million tons, increasing by 3.9% YOY. CAGR from 2006 to 2016 was 15.8%, far exceeding China’s GDP growth rate. While the production volume was growing, soft drinks have developed into more varieties and product structure has been adjusted. For example, carbonated beverages used to grow fast with a large production volume. However, its shares have been declining in recent years due to unfavorable concerns about the high calorie, poor nutrition and harm to health. By contrast, fruit and vegetable beverages, vegetable protein and milk beverages and energy drinks have been growing fast because of good tastes and rich nutrition.

In China, end consumers are divided into households and catering businesses. There are both similarities and differences between the two markets. CRI analysis in this regard will be included in the report.

According to CRI, China’s soft drink manufacturers consist of regional leaders as well as national manufacturers such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Wahaha, Master Kong and Tongyi. Due to unbalanced economic development, the landscapes of soft drink markets in high-income first and second tier cities and low-income third and fourth tier cities and rural areas are different. Market shares of national leaders in certain regions might be smaller than that of regional enterprises. This largely depends on product varieties and retail prices. For example, in the third and fourth tier cities and rural areas, soft drinks that sell well are tea beverages priced at CNY 1-1.5 (250ml) and peanut milk priced at CNY 2-3 (500ml). By contrast, in the first and second tier cities, popular products are functional drinks priced at CNY 5-8 (360ml) and juice priced at CNY 3-5 (500ml).

CRI market research indicates that the sales model of different types of beverage companies vary greatly. National beverage manufacturers are capable of distributing products both online and offline because they invest considerably in advertizing, promotion and channel establishment. In comparison, regional beverage manufacturers rely on conventional offline channels to save marketing costs.

Star products change with time. For example, around 2010, the annual sales revenue of Wong Lo Kat (which was renamed as JDB) herbal tea increased from less than CNY 100 million to over tens of billions of yuan in less than 10 years’ time. The sales revenue of Wong Lo Kat is the highest in China’s soft drink market. In recent years, energy drinks containing taurine and vitamin have become new hits.

Although China’s soft drink industry has been developing fast in the past decade, consumption volume per capita is still lower than that in developed countries and the picture is worse in rural areas. China’s soft drink industry is in perfect competition because it is not controlled by state-owned capital as in other industries. Market competition is extremely intense, but vast investment opportunities are also embedded.

It is expected that China’s economy will continue to grow at over 6% and Chinese residents’ income will continue to increase, promoting the development of the soft drink industry in China.

Description

China has abundant and diversified RE resources. Rare earth elements can be divided into the light RE, medium RE and heavy RE by their atomic weight, physical and chemical properties. Light RE are mainly found in Baotou of Inner Mongolia and Liangshan of Sichuan while the other two categories of RE are found in Ganzhou of Jiangxi and Longyan of Fujian.

According to CRI, driven by low costs of RE mining, such as low labor costs, and less environmental protection cost, Chinese enterprises started large-scale RE mining and export in the 1990s. Exploitation of RE in other countries was ceased as a result. During the recent decade or so, China’s RE deposits are quickly diminishing. China once owned as much as over 70% of RE deposits in the world, but by the end of 2016, the proportion had fallen to 37%.

China implemented the license system of RE export quota from 1998 to 2015. On March 26, 2014, the WTO ruled that China’s export limits on RE violated WTO rules. The Chinese government cancelled export tariffs on RE on May 1, 2015 and the RE export quota system came to an end on January 1, 2016. Before then, smuggling had become the major means of export of quite a few Chinese RE enterprises since they had no access to export quotas. In spite of a number of rectifications, it is difficult to eradicate smuggling.

However, China still sets indicators for the total mining volume of rare earth ores (rare earth oxide – REO). RE mining indicators are published by the State Council for enterprises, targeted at the mining of strategic metals such as rare earth, tungsten and molybdenum. The aim is to ensure the sustainable supply of resources and maintain the supply-demand balance. In 2015, the indicated mining volume of RE ores (rare earth oxide – REO) amounted to a total 105,000 tons and remained unchanged in 2016-2017.

According to CRI, mining and refining of RE are monopolized by six major state-owned enterprises (SOE). Non-SOEs only have access to downstream industries, such as the production and application of RE materials. At present, the annual production capacity of China’s RE extraction enterprises is over 300,000 tons. However, annual global demand is less than 200,000 tons, including 50,000 tons to 60,000 tons on the international market and 100,000 tons on the domestic market. China still dominates the global RE market. In 2016, the actual production of RE in China was more than 150,000 tons. This is higher than the quota because of illegal mining and smuggling, which cannot be stamped out because they are free from taxes.

CRI market research shows that in 2016, the prices of rare earth oxides and metals were lower than that in 2015. The average prices of neodymium oxide, dysprosium oxide and terbium oxide fell by 4% to 15% YOY and that of lanthanum oxide, cerium oxide and yttrium oxide fell by 5% to 30%. With the Chinese government boosting crackdown on illegal RE mining and the adoption of national RE reserves, the prices of RE are expected to pick up.

In terms of demand, downstream RE demand is divided into five major parts: permanent magnet materials, catalytic materials, luminescent materials, polishing materials and hydrogen storage materials. With the rapid development of global high-tech industries, RE will be more extensively used in high-tech fields and consumption of RE new materials will grow rapidly. Wind power, new-energy vehicles, smart phones and wearable electronics and other industries related to RE all have a promising future, promoting the development of the RE industry. For example, in 2016, the global production volume of new-energy vehicles was over 1 million, among which 517,000 were produced in China, up by 51.8% YOY. Rare earth hydrogen storage alloy is mainly used in nickel hydrogen batteries. China and Japan supplies 95% of rare earth hydrogen storage alloy in the world and China produces over 70% of hydrogen storage alloy in the world. A hybrid vehicle consumes 10 kg hydrogen storage alloy. Generally, mixed RE metals account for 30% of hydrogen storage alloy, which means a vehicle consumes 3 kg RE. The electric motor of a hybrid vehicle consumes 1-3 kg NdFeB magnetic materials and an electric vehicle consumes 5-10 kg.

According to the plan of the Chinese government, China would have produced 2 million new-energy vehicles by 2020. If this target is achieved, new-energy vehicles would consume 10,000 tons or even more RE, significantly promoting the development of the RE industry.

According to applications, the demand of tires can be classified into OEM demand in vehicle manufacturing and replacement demand in automobile after-market. In developed countries, due to the high market saturation in automobile market, the sales of tire are mainly from after-market. According to CRI, in 2016, the production volume of tires was about 1.71 billion in the global market, increasing slightly compared to 2015. It is estimated that from 2017 to 2021, the CAGR of global tire production volume will remain at 1% and emerging markets become growth drivers.

Since 2000, China’s automobile industry has been developing fast. From 2009 to 2016, China was the world’s largest automobile manufacturer and the largest sales market for 8 years. Meanwhile, China was also the world’s largest producer and exporter of tires. In 2016, the production volume in China reached 946.98 million, up by 2.36% YOY. With the increasing production volume and reserve volume of automobiles, the demand for tires is rising in China’s domestic market. Because of huge cost advantages of Chinese tires, since 2000, the export of tires also presented an upward trend in China. In 2016, the export of automobile tires in China was 468.48 million, up by 5.4% YOY. Due to increased export volume of Chinese tires, many Chinese tire enterprises are confronted with trade disputes such as anti-dumping investigation. However, in general, the export volume still presents a rising trend because of huge cost advantages.

China has established an integrated industry chain of tire. In China, except for natural rubber which mainly relies on import, other raw materials of tire such as synthetic rubber, steel cord and carbon black can be produced by a great number of manufacturers in China. Chinese enterprises are also strong in producing tire molds and manufacturing machines.

Attracted by low production cost and huge market demand of the tire industry in China, major multinational tire enterprises have entered the Chinese market and regard China as the key global production base. At present, over half of China tire market is occupied by foreign-funded enterprises. Besides, foreign-funded enterprises dominate the high-end market in China. The profit margin of them is twice or even more than twice that of Chinese enterprises.

According to incomplete statistics by CRI, by the end of 2016, the number of tire manufacturers had been over 550 in China. Most of the domestic tire enterprises are characterized by a small size and weak strength. With the development of the economy and the capital market in China, Chinese enterprises have started to make overseas acquisitions of tire enterprises.

Chinese automobile industry develops rapidly after joining WTO, which promotes the development of the automobile tire industry. In 2016, the production volume of automobiles was 28.119 million, up by 14.5% YOY. The sales volume was 28.028 million, up by 13.7% YOY. Meanwhile, the automobile reserves are also increasing. By the end of 2016, civil automobile reserves reached 194 million, a huge contrast against the number of 24 million in 2003. The increased production volume and reserve volume of automobiles in China stimulate the demand for automobile tires.

Although China has become the world’s largest automobile market for 6 years since 2008, car ownership per capita remains at a low level. In 2016, the automobile reserves were only 140 per thousand, far lower than the 600 to 800 per thousand in developed countries. It is estimated that in the next few years, China’s annual economic growth will remain at over 6%. The production and sales volume will grow at about 5% a year. Additionally, the market demand for tires will keep rising. In China, the demand for replacement tires in automobile after-market will take up a larger proportion in the tire market.

Due to integrated upstream and downstream industry chains and low environmental expenses, China’s tire industry possesses huge advantages compared to other developing countries, such as India. CRI has analyzed that in the next few years, the domestic demand and export of China’s tire industry will continue to rise. Currently, though China’s tire enterprises are faced with problems including higher environmental requirements, overcapacity and increasing labor cost, there is still much room for development. Chinese government’s support also indicates good prospects for the development of China’s tire industry.
