Malaysia Insurance Industry

Malaysia stands as the fourth largest economy in Southeast Asia, characterized by robust economic growth, which reached an impressive 8.7% in 2022. The nation’s population is approaching 32.7 million people, and it boasts a GDP per capita of $12,400. As an upper middle-income country, Malaysia’s economic landscape is heavily influenced by consumption and international trade, constituting the most crucial components of its GDP. In 2022, Malaysia’s total exports and imports reached a remarkable RM2.85 trillion, equivalent to about $627 billion, marking a substantial 27.8% year-on-year increase. This achievement marked the second consecutive year in which Malaysia surpassed the 2 trillion-ringgit threshold.

During the period from 2011 to 2021, Malaysia’s total and foreign currency insurance premiums exhibited steady growth, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.2%. Much of this growth can be attributed to the life and takaful segment, which achieved a robust CAGR of 4.5%, resulting in an increase in penetration from 3.1% in 2011 to 3.9% in 2021. Conversely, the general (non-life) insurance and takaful markets experienced more moderate growth, with a CAGR expansion of only 0.4% over the last decade.

The automobile insurance sector significantly dominates the insurance landscape in Malaysia, representing 46% of the general insurance market and nearly two-thirds of the general takaful market. Following closely are fire insurance and health/personal accident insurance. Meanwhile, the takaful market is primarily characterized by personal lines, with automobile and health insurance collectively accounting for about 20% of the total market. These two segments hold a substantial 75% share of the takaful market, compared to 57% in the general insurance segment.

Between 2017 and 2021, Malaysia’s annual premium income exhibited a fluctuating trend, experiencing a minimal CAGR of 0.03%, according to CRI’s analysis. However, as the Malaysian economy gradually rebounds beyond 2022, the growth rate of premium income within the Malaysian insurance industry is expected to rise.

CRI anticipates the Malaysian insurance market will experience growth in the future. This growth will likely be driven by heightened public awareness of insurance, the increase in disposable income among the population, and the influence of insurtech, which is making insurance services more tailored and accessible. The projection suggests that Malaysia’s insurance premium income will reach $5.03 billion by 2032, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.6% from 2023 to 2032.

Vietnam Insurance Industry

On January 1, 2023, a revised version of Vietnam’s insurance industry law came into effect. This new law provides many opportunities for foreign companies operating in the insurance sector. Most importantly, this amendment to the law will allow foreign companies to enter the Vietnamese market to provide insurance services on a wholly-owned basis, meaning that local partners will no longer be required, which will further open up the market for foreign insurers wishing to do business in Vietnam.

In 2021, there are 76 service providers in Vietnam’s insurance market, including 33 single-member limited liability companies and 11 limited liability companies with more than one person. In addition, the operation of 18 representative offices of foreign insurance companies in Vietnam’s market has played a positive role in improving the investment environment and increasing the confidence of foreign investors in conducting insurance business operations in Vietnam.

In 2021, the insurance sector has been growing steadily with the growth rate of GDP compared to GDP. The industry’s revenue (including investment income) reached VND255,876 million (about $11 million), of which, insurance premiums amounted to VND218,357 million (about $9,389,000), and investment income amounted to VND37,519 million (about $1,613,300).

In 2021, total underwritten premiums for life insurance in Vietnam amounted to VND59,135 billion (about US$2,543 million), a year-on-year increase of 4.34%. Compared to 2020, most of the key businesses achieved high growth rates, such as aviation insurance (38.77%), agricultural insurance (32.67%), cargo insurance (21.58%), liability insurance (21.58%), fire and explosion insurance (17.66%), hull and P&I (13.26%), property insurance (6.63%), business interruption insurance (5.73%), health insurance insurance (5.73%), and health insurance (4.34% year-on-year). ), and health insurance coverage (3.77%).

As Vietnam’s economy grows, so does the insurance awareness of its residents.CRI expects Vietnam’s insurance premium income to reach US$37.5 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.3% from 2023 to 2032.

Indonesia Insurance Industry

Insurance is a major form of risk management and can be divided into two categories, property insurance and personal insurance, depending on the object of the insurance. Indonesia’s booming economy has contributed to the expansion of its insurance industry. Currently, Indonesia’s insurance industry is still at a certain stage of development, with a steady growth rate of over 10% since 2008, especially in life insurance.

However, it cannot be ignored that the insurance penetration rate in Indonesia is only 3.06% by 2021. The low penetration rate also means a large market for the industry. In addition to exploring the development direction of insurance innovation by itself, Indonesia is also constantly influenced by the technology business model of China and the US.

Indonesia’s insurance industry continues to decline in 2020 and 2021, before seeing a strong rebound in 2022. This growth is driven by strong economic recovery and increased frequency of extreme weather events, which have led to increased demand for natural disaster insurance products. According to CRI’s analysis, total premiums written in Indonesia show a fluctuating growth trend from 2018-2022, with a CAGR of 5.37% from 2018-2022. in 2022, total premiums written in Indonesia will be approximately USD 4.79 billion, an increase of 10.17% year-on-year.

According to CRI, the market size of gross written premiums will reach US$ 8.58 billion in 2032 and the CAGR in 2023 to 2032 is 6.00%.

In Indonesia, life insurance is generally larger than general insurance, with general insurance coming in second. Property insurance is the largest type of general insurance, and CRI expects it to account for 34.5% of general insurance premiums written in Indonesia by 2023. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6% from 2023-27. Growth in residential sector sales and the country’s increased exposure to recurring NatCat events will drive growth in property insurance in the country.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, Indonesia recorded 3,544 NatCat events in 2022, including 28 earthquakes, 1,531 flood events and 1,068 other extreme weather events. This resulted in 95,403 property damage events, including 20,205 events with severe property damage, and property insurers are expected to incur losses of IDR 2.2 trillion (US$147.4 million) in 2022.

Financial insurance is the second largest insurance category and is expected to account for 22.1% of general insurance premiums by 2023, followed by auto insurance, which CRI expects to account for 17.7%. 25.7%.

Southeast Asia Vocational and Technical Education Industry

With the economic development of Southeast Asia, various fields are thriving and technology is constantly updated, but there is a shortage of talents in some industries, and a large number of people with relevant skills are needed to enter the industry. With a large population and a young demographic structure in Southeast Asia, the population of Generation Z is about 160 million, accounting for about 24% of the total population, and the future development of vocational and technical education has a bright future.

In 2017, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) held an international conference at its headquarters in Thailand to include TVET as a priority project, focusing on the training of vocational and technical personnel in tourism, manufacturing, agriculture and construction. According to CRI’s analysis, the Southeast Asian vocational and technical education sector has a wide range of development levels in different countries.

Taking Singapore as an example, Singapore’s vocational education system has become more mature, and based on international experience, it has established a modern vocational education system that is adapted to modern economic development, oriented to the needs of business and industry, progressive and interconnected with various types of education, and set up craft education colleges, polytechnics and various training institutions to provide students with skills and knowledge learning in an occupational cluster.

Southeast Asia in this report includes 10 countries: Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia. With a total population of over 600 million by the end of 2021, Southeast Asia has an overall economic growth rate higher than the global average and is one of the key drivers of future global economic growth.

According to CRI’s analysis, the economic levels of the 10 Southeast Asian countries vary greatly, with Singapore being the only developed country with a per capita GDP of about US$73,000 in 2021. While Myanmar and Cambodia will have a GDP per capita of less than US$2,000 in 2021. The population and minimum wage levels of each country also vary greatly. Brunei, which has the smallest population, will have a total population of less than 500,000 people in 2021, while Indonesia, which has the largest population, will have a population of about 275 million people in 2021.

Southeast Asian economies still have strong growth potential, and most sectors are still in their infancy or developmental stages, with demand for skilled personnel gradually increasing. CRI expects the Southeast Asia vocational and technical education industry to continue to grow from 2023-2032.

There are differences in the development of e-commerce industry among Southeast Asian countries. According to CRI’s analysis, Singapore has a well-developed e-commerce industry, and the largest online e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia, Shopee and Lazada, are both headquartered in Singapore; Malaysia has a high Internet penetration rate and a mature e-commerce market; Indonesia has a population of more than 274 million, and its huge population makes Indonesia have the largest e-commerce market in Southeast Asia. The e-commerce industry in the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand are in the growth explosion period, developing rapidly and with great potential.

CRI expects the Southeast Asia e-commerce industry to maintain growth from 2023-2032. On the one hand, the number of online shopping users in Southeast Asia has been increasing year after year, showing a trend of rejuvenation and huge potential for consumption growth. On the other hand, Southeast Asia’s digital financial services, such as online payment and microfinance, continue to develop, driving the scale of Southeast Asia’s e-commerce industry to continue to expand.

Southeast Asia Private Kindergarten Industry

Southeast Asia is densely populated with young demographics, and with a population growth rate of approximately 1.65% in 2020, Southeast Asia has a significant amount of population growth. The large total population has led to a gradual increase in the number of preschool-age children in Southeast Asia.

According to CRI’s analysis, as Southeast Asia’s economy grows and the middle class expands, parents pay more attention to their children’s education and invest more in their children’s education, driving the development of Southeast Asia’s education industry. In terms of preschool education, private kindergartens with beautiful teaching environment, complete teaching facilities and more abundant school places are attracting the attention of Southeast Asian parents.

The private kindergarten industry in Southeast Asia varies from country to country. According to CRI’s analysis, Singapore’s private kindergarten industry is relatively mature, with private kindergartens spread across the island, adopting the same teaching model as public kindergartens and providing children with quality hardware facilities while ensuring the quality of teaching.

In contrast, the private kindergarten industry in Vietnam is at a developmental stage, and in 2018, the Vietnamese government amended Protocol No. 86 on Foreign Investment and Cooperation in Education to raise the quota of Vietnamese students in foreign-invested schools, further contributing to the development of the private kindergarten industry in Vietnam, with the number of private kindergartens growing.

For example, the Indonesian Stock Exchange is one of the major stock exchanges in Southeast Asia, with a market capitalization of about US$500 billion, and the growth potential of the Indonesian economy and the country’s large population size give the Indonesian Stock Exchange great room for growth. The Cambodian Stock Exchange and the Yangon Stock Exchange are among the smallest exchanges in the world due to their short history, while Brunei has not yet established a stock exchange.

With the development of Southeast Asia’s economy, Southeast Asia’s securities industry has also shown rapid development, attracting not only local residents and institutions to invest in Southeast Asia’s securities industry, but also a large number of foreign investors and foreign residents to invest in Southeast Asia’s securities industry.

CRI expects that the securities industry in Southeast Asia will maintain growth from 2023-2032. On the one hand, Southeast Asia’s economic growth, higher disposable income of residents, the expansion of the size of the middle class, the gradual inflow of residents’ wealth from deposits to securities investment, and on the other hand, the promising market in Southeast Asia, attracting a large number of foreign capital inflows, driving the development of the securities industry in Southeast Asia.
